When it comes to choosing a fireplace that’s clean, modern and convenient, bioethanol fires are ticking all the right boxes. They bring instant ambience without the environmental concerns or hassle of logs or gas. But one question we hear time and again is: how long does bioethanol fuel last?

Understanding bioethanol fuel duration is key for anyone thinking of switching to this eco-friendly heating option and for those who want to get the most from their fire. In this blog, we’ll explore everything you need to know about bioethanol burn time, fuel efficiency, and the factors that influence bioethanol consumption rate…

Bioethanol fuel duration explained

Bioethanol fuel duration is typically around 3.5-4 hours per litre on full flame. That’s long enough to warm your evening, impress your guests, or simply create a calming moment of tranquillity after a long day.

However, like most things in life, it’s not quite one-size-fits-all. The bioethanol fuel duration can vary depending on several factors, which we’ll explore below.

What affects bioethanol burn time?

1. Flame size settings

Most of our bioethanol fires come with an easily adjustable fuel box opening. Keeping the fuel box only partially opened will naturally reduce the bioethanol consumption rate, meaning your fuel lasts longer. For a smaller room, or when you're after a gentle glow, this setting is perfect, and can stretch that litre out to 5 hours or more.

2. Environmental conditions

Like with all heating systems, the environment plays a role too. Draughty rooms, open windows or extractor fans can all influence the flame, causing the fuel to burn faster. Likewise, if you are using the fire outdoors, windy conditions will shorten the burn time. A calm, enclosed space will give you a more consistent flame.

3. Burner size

It might sound obvious, but the size of your fire’s burner matters. Larger burners with a bigger opening will burn bioethanol fuel at a faster rate, while compact tabletop models or smaller wall-mounted units will naturally sip fuel rather than guzzle it.

Fuel efficiency: getting the most from every drop

If you're keen to improve your fuel efficiency, there are a few simple habits you can adopt:

  • Don’t overfill: Stick to the recommended capacity - all of our models have a patented ‘no-spill’ 1-litre fuel box. They all have a clear ‘max’ indicator, past which you should never fill.  Overfilling increases the risk of spillage and can be a potential fire hazard.

  • Keep your burner clean: A tidy burner equals a more efficient burn. Clean it out regularly to ensure nothing has fallen inside the fuel box that may cause smoke.

  • Use high-quality fuel: Not all bioethanol is created equal. Lower-quality fuels can burn unevenly or faster, while premium options (like the one we stock at imaginfires) ensure a steady, clean flame. You can buy our premium bioethanol fuel online with low odour and scented options available.

Bioethanol consumption rate: what should you expect?

Bioethanol consumption rate can be affected by environmental factors, but it can also be controlled manually. imaginfires bioethanol fires are all fitted with our patented ‘no spill’ 1-litre fuel boxes which have an adjustable slider that lets you control the size of the flame. The size of the hole relates directly to the amount of fuel used:

Fuel box half open: 4-5 hours (sometimes more)

Fuel box fully open: around 3.5-4 hours

Top Tip: Never add more fuel when the fuel box is actively burning or still warm, as it could ignite as you pour. One litre should give you plenty of time to enjoy the ambience of a real flame, otherwise use your adjustable slider to slow down the consumption rate.

How long will stored bioethanol last?

Here's another common question - how long does bioethanol last in storage?

As long as you keep your fuel sealed and stored in a cool, dry place, it can last for many months without issue. We also strongly advise biofuel is never stored near any heat or flame source.  Bioethanol doesn’t degrade  quickly, but you should always keep it tightly closed to prevent evaporation. So, no need to worry if you’re stocking up for the season - you can buy in bulk here and store safely until needed.

Budgeting for a bioethanol fireplace?

By understanding the key factors that affect bioethanol burn time - from flame size and room conditions to your burner’s design - you can plan your usage, stretch your fuel further, and make every litre count. Visit our FAQ on bioethanol fuel duration to find out more.
