  • Will my bioethanol fireplace need professional installation?

Not at all. Just place your fireplace where you want it, add fuel, and ignite. No tools, tradespeople, or building work required.

  • How do I light a bioethanol fireplace?

Customers thinking about buying one of our bioethanol fireplaces often ask “How do I Light A Bioethanol fireplace?” It’s such a common question as many customers cannot believe that using a Biofire is as straightforward as we say.

All you need is a fire lighter and some bioethanol fuel. You simply squeeze the biofuel into the fuel box, and light at arms-length! That’s it! You should of course clear away any spilt fuel with a paper towel or cloth before lighting, and if you have any of our ceramic pebbles or logs then don’t position them over the opening of the fuel box.

Once lit, you will get around 3.5 to 4 hours from 1 litre of fuel. If you need to close off the flame before all the biofuel has been used up, it’s just as easy. Simply use the supplied closing tool to pull the shutter on the fuel box over the flame. Should you need to refuel the fireplace, please allow at least 30 minutes or until the fuel box has returned to room temperature.

  • Are there any emissions from a bioethanol fire?

The only emissions produced from burning bioethanol fuel are heat, water vapour, and carbon dioxide. Burning bioethanol uses oxygen from the air and emits a small amount of carbon dioxide back into the room. You might think that sounds worrying, but a bioethanol fireplace generally releases roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide as two burning candles. So, there’s nothing to worry about.

Your bioethanol fireplace uses oxygen from the air, so it’s advisable to create some ventilation in your room whenever you burn your fire. Keep your living room door open while burning, or open a window for a few minutes to let some fresh air in if the air becomes stuffy.

Do bioethanol fireplaces generate more emissions than others?

All fires generate emissions, including carbon dioxide, but wood- and coal-burning releases carcinogenic soot and ash particles into the air. Bioethanol burns cleanly, leaving no soot, ash, or any other residue, so bioethanol fuels are generally considered much safer in the long run.

We recommend buying high-quality bioethanol fuel from a reputable vendor. We sell excellent bioethanol fuel and three scented fuels with vanilla, forest, or Christmas aromas.

Bioethanol doesn’t create carbon monoxide, a dangerous, poisonous, odourless gas. However, if you’re worried, install a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as your bioethanol fireplace to set your mind at rest.

  • I didnt receive all my items at same time!

In the majority of cases, all items on your order will arrive together.  However, during busy periods if you order a biofire and accessories such as logs, pebbles or biofuel, they do sometimes get deliberately separated by the courier, but then get delivered within 72 hours of the first item arriving.  This is currently unavoidable in some circumstances only.  At this exceptionally busy time of year, can we please request that you only contact us about missing items if they have not arrived within 72 hours of the initial item.  We really appreciate your help.

  • Are bioethanol fireplaces safe?

    Are bioethanol fireplaces safe?

Bioethanol fireplaces produce real flames, so it's important that they should be treated with the same level of caution and safety as any other object that produces flames. Having said this, bioethanol fireplace safety procedures are very easy to follow, meaning that they are suitable for use in most homes.

To ensure that our customers stay as safe as possible, Imaginfires are constantly updating and improving our biofires. This means that our ethanol fireplace safety features have been tested by a world-renowned testing laboratory to ensure they meet the new British and European safety standard BS EN 16647:2015. Customers can rest assured that we only sell products that we would and have been delighted to install in our own homes.

What makes bioethanol fires safe indoors?

Recent updates include the introduction of a new, patented, ‘no-spill’ fuel box into our freestanding, fire basket and woodburner biofires. This means that the biofuel is quickly absorbed by a special internal absorption feature, reducing the risk of any biofuel spilling out of the fireplace when knocked.

Of course, despite every effort being made to make biofires as safe as possible, there are a few basic safety measures biofire users should always follow. These are all listed in the supplied product manual, but include:

    Taking care with biofuel

Biofuel is obviously a flammable substance, so it should be handled with care for maximum ethanol fireplace safety. It is important never to pour biofuel onto a lit or warm fireplace. Rather, users should only refuel the fireplace once it has been turned off and cooled down.

Before refilling the steel fuel box with the bioethanol fuel, always ensure the fuel box has returned to room temperature (this takes approximately 30 minutes from extinguishing the fire). You should also clean up any biofuel spillages before lighting the fire.

    Purchase high-quality fuel

To keep your running costs reasonable and to avoid any potential problems that low quality biofuel could cause, we recommend buying the fuel that is of a high quality and has at least 95% alcohol. This provides the best and longest flame.

We offer some of the best value biofuel in the market, and our fuel is developed and bottled specifically for Imaginfires biofires. You can read many great Trustpilot reviews we have received from customers for our biofuel.

  • Do I need the large or small log set?

There is no right or wrong answer. It's just a matter of personal preference. Some customers like the look of just a few logs in front of the flame, and so the small log set containing 3 logs is ideal. Others prefer the more 'full look' of the large set, which typically contains a mix of 9 logs/cones. A small number of customers prefer a more minimalist aesthetic of no accessories at all. Regardless of what set you choose, please just remember not to put them OVER the opening of the fuel box. Only locate them AROUND the opening.

  • Do I need a chimney for a bioethanol fire?

No. You don't need a chimney with a bioethanol fireplace because bioethanol fuel burns cleanly — without smoke, soot, or ash. This makes bioethanol the ideal alternative energy source for buildings that don't have chimneys, such as flats, conservatories, and many modern homes.

Do I need a flue for a bioethanol fire?

Bioethanol fuel burns without creating any harmful emissions — it uses a little oxygen from the room and emits:

    • Heat (around 3kWh or equivalent of an electric heater on medium)
    • Water vapour (although you won't notice it), and
    • A little carbon dioxide — don't worry, burning bioethanol produces around the same amount of carbon dioxide as two lit candles.

This makes it safe to burn indoors without a flue or a chimney.

It is good, however, to have some ventilation to prevent the room from becoming too stuffy. So, we recommend keeping an internal door open to ensure the through-flow of oxygen or opening the window a little to let fresh air in.

You may have seen some images on our website and social media of some of our fireplaces with our flues. These are FALSE FLUES and just add to the wood burner effect and do not impact on the heat output as there are vents on the rear of these flues to help the heat circulate.

Can I install a bioethanol fireplace into my existing fireplace with a chimney?

Absolutely. If you have an existing chimney but are concerned about burning fossil fuels, such as wood or coal, a bioethanol fireplace makes an excellent alternative heat source for your room.

Remember, chimneys reduce the efficiency of all fires because a lot of the heat from the burn escapes up the chimney. So, an open vent will reduce the amount of heat produced by your bioethanol fireplace.

You can close off your chimney with a proprietary”chimney sock” and some fireboard to stop the heat escaping.

Can I use a bioethanol fireplace with a closed chimney?

If your chimney is closed, a bioethanol fire is the ideal eco-friendly heat source because it burns at around 98-100% fuel efficiency (compared to approximately 80% or lower for a traditional wood-burning stove). You don't need a flue or working chimney to operate bioethanol fireplaces.

  • What flooring can be used with my biofire?

Which flooring should I use with my biofire?

All of our biofires are safe for use on most flooring. They come fitted with rubber feet (made by 3M), which prevents heat transfer and floor damage. However, we don’t recommend that you drag your fireplace across the floor to preserve the life of the rubber feet and prevent floor marking.

Is my flooring suitable for a bioethanol fireplace?

Our fireplaces do not require a hearth as the heat is not generated at the bottom of the fireplace, however some customers have installed hearths for their own personal aesthetics.

Our bioethanol fireplaces are strongly built but lighter in weight at less than half the weight of a cast iron fireplace.

One of the best things about a bioethanol fireplace is that you can unwrap it, fill it with fuel, and immediately enjoy a natural flame. There’s no special installation necessary, and you don’t need a flue or a chimney.

Our fireplaces do not require a hearth as the heat is not generated at the bottom of the fireplace, however some customers have installed hearths for their own personal aesthetics.

  • How does a bio ethanol fireplace work?

Just squeeze the bioethanol fuel from our ‘squeezy’ bottles into the burner box supplied with your fireplace. Using a gas-lighter-style tool or extended taper, light the bioethanol fuel.

Within just a few minutes, a lovely natural and cosy flame will appear. Use the metal closing rod supplied to pull/ push the sliding mechanism over the flame to adjust or extinguish the flame.

  • Can you put a TV above a bioethanol fireplace?

As there is no smoke given off by our bioethanol fires, you don't need to worry about smoke damage to your TV. Nevertheless, we recommend that you only place a TV above a bio ethanol fireplace that has a closed top, such as our extremely popular wall mounted Marlow.

Ideally you can leave 18 inches between the top of the fire and the bottom of the TV.

  • Do bioethanol fires produce heat?

    Are bioethanol fires warm?

Perhaps surprisingly, this is a very common question that confuses many people!

While biofires are not intended as a primary heat source for your home, your bioethanol fireplace gives off plenty of heat, with much better fuel efficiency than a wood-burning stove (which loses around 40% of its heat up the chimney).

So with our fireplaces you can close off the chimney (with a proprietary chimney sock or similar) and finish off above the fireplace with a piece of fireboard or similar for that added bit of protection.

Do bioethanol fires give off heat?

Yes. The real flame provides a cosy atmosphere, but it also produces a comfortable toastiness for your room.

However, we don’t recommend replacing your central heating system with a bioethanol fireplace as it will not produce enough heat and will be expensive to run. But for supplementary heat, you’ll love the comfortable warmth produced by your bioethanol flame.

Our fireplaces are ideal for those cooler summer evenings when you don’t want to heat the whole house, just taking the chill off a room and alternatively are also great for that added boost of heat in a room on the colder winter evenings.

How much heat does a bioethanol fireplace produce in Kilowatt-hours?

In technical terms, bioethanol fireplaces produce around 3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of heat when the fuel gauge is fully open.

To give you an idea of how hot this is, the average electric fire will generate around 2kWh of heat. So, depending on the size of your room, your bioethanol fireplace gives off heat that maintains a comfortable, consistent temperature.

Wood-burning stoves and open fireplaces generally generate around 5kWh of heat (depending on their size), but this is often too hot for small-to-medium-sized rooms. So, you should find that your bioethanol fireplace gives off plenty of heat, even for deep midwinter.

If anything, you may find that a full bioethanol flame is a little too hot for your tastes. Fortunately, the easily adjustable slider on the fuel box will allow you to reduce the strength of the flame as you desire.

How hot is an ethanol fireplace?

If you place a wood burner thermometer on a bioethanol fireplace, you’ll find that it hits the temperature considered Best Operation for a wood burner (between 130ºC and 280ºC). At full burn, it reaches around 180ºC, which is plenty to warm a small-to-medium-sized room.

However, we don't recommend replacing your central heating system with a bioethanol fire - we don't consider it a suitable replacement for your primary heating source. But it is perfect as a top up fireplace or suitable for when you just wish to warm up one room.

Bioethanol makes a perfect additional heat source, offering a real, warming flame. In a standard-sized room, an average-sized bioethanol fireplace will give off as much heat as an electric heater on a medium-to-high setting.

We recommend our larger bioethanol fireplaces for big rooms - our customers love our  Marlow fireplace or the freestanding  Globus. Larger fireplaces are capable of producing more heat.

Whichever bioethanol fireplace you choose, be assured that you'll get a natural, warming flame that brings a beautiful toasty warmth and cosiness to your room.

Biofire is an environmentally-friendly heating option

Bioethanol fuel provides a guilt-free flame — it’s carbon neutral and doesn’t pollute the air or damage the environment.

And, of course, with the spiralling price of gas and electricity, bioethanol puts you in control of your heating bills. You can rest assured that you’re using a green energy source that doesn’t pollute or damage the environment.

Many of our bioethanol fireplaces are portable, so you can use them outside. However, be aware that your bioethanol fuel is unlikely to last as long in windy conditions.

Bioethanol fireplaces are perfect for conservatories because you don’t need a flue or chimney to run your fire safely. Just fill your fireplace with bioethanol, light the flame, and enjoy a toasty warmth without the hassle or mess of burning wood or coal.

  • Do Bioethanol Fireplace suites require a hearth?

There's no legal requirement to install a hearth stone for your bioethanol fireplace, unlike a traditional wood-burning or coal stove fireplace.

Traditional wood- or coal fireplaces get much hotter than bioethanol fireplaces, and there's a much higher risk of burning embers and ashes falling from the body of the fire. This means that traditional fireplaces require hearths made from heat- and fire-resistant materials to minimise the house fire risk.

Is there a need for a hearth with biofires?

The simple answer is no. Our biofire suites may resemble traditional open fireplaces, but they don't need a hearth. Instead, your room is protected by a 6mm tempered stay-clear safety glass barrier. You get a mantel shelf, the fireplace surround, the steel fireplace insert, a bioethanol fuel box, a safety-glass barrier, and a fire closing tool.

We have two bioethanol fireplace suites - the elegant Holborn, suited to period properties, and the Broadway, which enhances a more modern space.

Broadway without Hearth                             Broadway with Hearth

And while there's no need for a hearth, some of our customers choose to install one. ImaginFires don't supply hearths, however.

  • Does bioethanol fuel evaporate?

    Does my fuel evaporate?

    The simple answer is yes.

Bioethanol fuel is mostly alcohol, so it will evaporate over time.

    How quickly does ethanol evaporate?

Bioethanol is generally around 96% alcohol, meaning your fuel evaporates fairly rapidly, which is why you buy it in airtight containers.

But there are steps you can follow to minimise evaporation.

How do I prevent ethanol evaporation?

As a rough guide, 1 litre of our high-quality bioethanol fuel lasts around 3-4 hours with the shutter fully open and therefore Half a litre will last around 2 hours in your ethanol fireplace.

You can always refill it if you change your mind, BUT make sure you leave around 30 minutes for the fuel box to cool down completely before adding more fuel.

If fuel remains at the end of your burning session, close the lid of the fuel box to minimise evaporation.

  • Can a biofire be placed flat against a wall?

Can a freestanding bioethanol fireplace be placed flat against a wall?

You get lots of flexibility with our freestanding bioethanol fireplaces - all suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Whether you choose a traditional log-burner-style fireplace, a funky bioethanol fireplace insert, or a sleek, modern signature piece, you’ll have plenty of flexibility regarding where you choose to use it.

When you’re storing your fireplace, you can keep it flat against the wall to save space, but we suggest you move your fireplace off the wall when in use.

Where do I place my freestanding bioethanol fireplace?

Move your fireplace a minimum of 100mm from the wall before you light it. Keep it away from the wall while it's in use. This ensures good air circulation around the fireplace.

Never move your bioethanol fireplace while it’s lit or still warm. It will be hot to the touch so you must wait until it has cooled.

Alternatively, you might opt for a wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace. These are fixed directly to the wall, meaning you don’t get the flexibility of a freestanding model, but you get a super-slick fireplace that will be the envy of your friends and family. Our wall-mounted fireplaces come with a wall mounting kit, which is simple to install safely without any specialist skills.

  • How long does bioethanol fuel last?

Simply squeeze the fuel out of the bottle and into the fuel box. You can then sit back and enjoy the benefits of your bioethanol fireplace. But for how long exactly?

So, how long does bio ethanol fuel burn in a biofire?

On average, a litre of our bioethanol fuel will last between three and a half to four hours, and sometimes longer. The exact time depends on a wide number of issues, including the amount of natural ventilation in the room, the type of biofuel being used, the prevailing room temperature and the extent to which you open the steel fuel box slider.  When the slider is opened fully, fuel will be used at a faster rate than when it is only opened halfway.

    Type of fuel box

    Burning time (per litre)

    Half open

4 to 5 hours (sometimes more)

    Fully open

    Around 4 hours

How long does bioethanol fuel last comparatively in both large and small biofires?

All of our fireplaces have our patented 1 litre fuel boxes with an adjustable slider so you can choose to reduce the size of the hole the flame comes out of, which will in turn make the fuel last longer.

Can I overfill my bioethanol fuel box to burn for longer?

Never overfill your bioethanol fuel box. This can cause leakage across the top of the fuel box, which could present a fire risk.

Always ensure that the fuel box has cooled down before you add more bioethanol. Never add more fuel when the fuel box is actively burning or still warm — the fuel could ignite as you pour, which could be extremely dangerous.

How long does ethanol fireplace fuel last in a larger fireplace?

Larger bioethanol fireplaces (with bigger steel fuel boxes) burn bioethanol fuel at a faster rate than  smaller bioethanol fireplaces. Generally speaking, fuel boxes with a smaller opening tend to burn for longer.

If burning bioethanol outdoors in windy conditions, the wind will make the fuel burn faster and shorten the total burn time.

How can I find the cheapest bio fuel?

Biofuel is widely available to buy from various outlets. However, we strongly recommend purchasing your fuel from Imaginfires. We provide fuel at an affordable price that you can rest assured will burn at an excellent rate.

Some of the cheapest brands out there often produce a strong unpleasant smell when burning, and often come in unwieldy containers prone to spillage.  We strongly recommend you only use biofuel that is specifically for bioethanol fireplaces and has at least 96% alcohol content.

  • Do I need the large or small set of logs for my bio fire?

Some people enjoy the modern, minimalist aesthetic of a bioethanol fireplace without a log set. However, many of our happy customers prefer to add ceramic pebbles or logs to heighten the traditional feel of their wood burner-style bioethanol fireplace

Our range of bioethanol fireplace accessories includes reusable ceramic logs and pebbles. We find that our ceramic logs add a traditional look to your bioethanol fireplace, while our ceramic pebbles offer a Japanese "zen" feel to your fireplace insert or fireplace.

Whether you choose a wood burner-style bioethanol fireplace, a fireplace insert, a freestanding biofire, or a more traditional-looking bioethanol suite , logs or pebbles can lift the appearance of your chosen fireplace.

What size fireplace logs are best for bioethanol fireplaces?

It depends on personal preference whether you choose the large log set (containing a mix of 9 logs/pine cones) or the small set (including 3 logs). You might enjoy the "full fireplace" look of the large set or the subtle impression of a traditional fireplace provided by the small log set.

Large log set v Small log set

Whichever you choose, make sure that you keep the opening of the fuel box clear . Never obstruct the flame aperture with your logs or pebbles - locate them AROUND the opening.

  • Where can I use a Biofire?

Our Biofires are designed to be used as SECONDARY heating source in a house or similar residential dwelling. They are not intended for use in commercial properties or vehicles. We are aware that some people have chosen to use a biofire in a range of other ways, including on barges, in marquees or various DIY projects. Whilst we cannot prevent customers from using a biofire in such ways, we would strongly urge you to remember that a bifore contains real flames, and should be treated with great care about where it is being positioned, and who may be within the vicinity of its real flames. Unfortunately we do not offer custom designs, or installation of a biofire.

  • How much heat will my Imaginfires biofuel fireplace generate?

Some people think that a bioethanol fireplace is purely decorative — this is not true. A bioethanol fireplace can warm your room to a comfortable, cosy temperature — offering controllable heat from a beautiful, real flame. However, buy a bioethanol fireplace suitable for your room’s size, and you’ll be very happy with your warm, cosy space.

How does Imaginfires bioethanol fireplace compare to other heaters?

In general, a bioethanol fireplace produces around 3kWh of heat. This is roughly equivalent to an electric radiator running at medium — perfect for taking the edge off the cold in the autumn and early winter.

In deepest winter, you may need to run your central heating and your biofire — but running both will mean that you don’t need to push your gas boiler so hard, which will help reduce your gas bills.

A bioethanol fireplace is perfect if you want to heat one room, not the whole house.

We love heating the living room with bioethanol and leaving the heating off in the rest of the home. That way, you really notice the toastiness in the living room when you return from making a cup of tea in the kitchen.

  • What is the running cost of a bio ethanol fireplace?

The cost of running your bioethanol fireplace depends entirely on the amount you use it and the size of the flame you demand for your burn.

Unlike gas, there are no standing charges for bioethanol — you purchase your bioethanol fuel as and when you need it. And unlike coal and wood-burners, no additional supplies are required, such as kindling, firelighters, and chimney sweeps.

The cost of bioethanol fuel is more stable than gas, wood, and coal

We’re living through particularly volatile times in terms of fuel prices, with gas and electricity skyrocketing, affecting the prices of almost every other commodity, including the cost of wood and coal. However, the price of bioethanol fuel has remained relatively stable, meaning that bioethanol is a very competitive option.

How much does 1 litre of bioethanol fuel cost (and how long does it last)?

You can pay as much as £7 for a single litre of bioethanol fuel, which should last around 4 hours of burning on full. All of our bioethanol fireplaces have slider control, which reduces the size of the flame — in turn, reducing the heat output. So, if you reduce the output by 50%, your litre of fuel will last considerably longer.

Buying bioethanol fuel in bulk reduces the costs considerably. For example, 12 bottles of ImagiFuel currently cost £44.99, which makes it £3.75 per litre.

So, if your litre burns for 4 hours, it costs 94p an hour.

For a direct comparison, check out our article comparing the cost of burning bioethanol fuel against wood and gas — you’ll find bioethanol very competitive.

  • What is a ventless fireplace?

A ventless biofuel fireplace is simply a fireplace that does not require a chimney, flue or any other venting duct. If you have a biofuel fireplace and some biofuel, then you have all you need to create a beautiful looking fire. Since no flue or chimney is needed, its much easier and cheaper to install than a more traditional gas or wood fireplace.

  • How does a bioethanol fire work?

Bio ethanol fireplaces (also known as biofires) don't require chimneys or flues as the fuel burns without producing smoke or soot. The bioethanol fuel is poured into our double lined stainless steel fuel box (any spillages must be wiped away before lighting) and lit with a firelighter. The flame height can be adjusted by opening or closing the fuel box slightly. Once finished simply slide the shutter over the opening in the fuel box to extinguish the flame. It's that easy !

  • Do I need a flue or chimney with a bioethanol fireplace?

Short answers are always nice, aren’t they? Do you need a flue or chimney with a bioethanol fireplace?

    No.

Therefore, one of the most significant benefits of bioethanol fireplaces is their versatility.

You’re no longer constrained to gas or electric fires if you don’t have a chimney. And you can use a beautiful bioethanol fireplace anywhere - a house, a flat, a home office, a garage - basically, wherever you want to enjoy a cosy, warming flame.

And it won’t cost you a fortune to install your biofire

In fact, installation is as simple as unpacking your biofire, placing it in your desired spot, and lighting it. Warm and cosy in less than an hour.

Why don’t biofires need a flue or chimney?

It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? A real flame and no flue or chimney. But it’s true.

Burning wood and coal produces smoke, soot, ash, and a LOT of mess. And wood and coal burning are heavily associated with air pollution in urban areas.

On the other hand, bioethanol fuel burns cleanly without polluting the air inside or outside of your home. And this means you don’t need a flue or chimney with a bioethanol fireplace — better for the environment and better for you.

Can I get a false flue for my bioethanol fireplace?

Yes. We sell false flues that magnetically connect to the top of your biofire. The upper end of the flue curves to a right angle, making it look like your flue connects to the outside.

Of course, there’s no need for a flue with a biofire — but if you want that traditional woodburner look, complete it with a beautiful false flue.

What happens when you burn bioethanol?

Bioethanol needs oxygen to combust, so it burns some of the oxygen in the room. This is why we recommend ensuring your room is ventilated — keep your internal door open to ensure airflow, or open a window every couple of hours if it’s feeling stuffy.

While it sounds a bit worrying that your fire uses oxygen in the room, it’s precisely the same with any fire: wood, coal, or bioethanol — they all produce flames that use up oxygen from the room.

What emissions do you get from burning bioethanol?

We all know that wood and coal produce smoke, soot, and ash. These flames also send out tiny carcinogenic particles into the air, which can be health hazards, especially if you’re prone to respiratory problems.

However, the only emissions from burning bioethanol are:

    • Carbon dioxide — about the same amount as burning two candles
    • Water vapour — but you won’t notice it in the room.

That’s it. Just a little carbon dioxide and water vapour.

This makes bioethanol much safer and better for the environmentthan fossil fuels.

And your house plants will love it — they’ll absorb the carbon dioxide produced by your biofire and thrive!

  • Does bio ethanol fuel produce smoke or soot ?

Bioethanol fuel burns with 98% efficiency, so when used correctly it is very clean burning and therefore does not produce any smoke, soot or nasty residues.

So what does ethanol produce when burned? Nothing more than carbon dioxide and water. You should never observe any smoke or soot coming out of your bioethanol fireplace.

Potential Reasons Bioethanol Fireplace Sets Off Smoke Alarm

In the unlikely event that your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm is triggered whilst using a biofire, please in the first instance always stop using the biofire and check the following:

    • That no stray household debris has accidentally fallen into the fuel box and is thus being burned and emitting smoke. Please wait for the biofire to return to room temperature before checking!
    • That you are using high grade bioethanol fuel specifically developed for bioethanol fireplaces.  Do not use any biofuel that does not clearly state it is formulated for use in bioethanol fireplaces. Also ensure it is at least 96% alcohol as this gives the cleanest and longest usage time.
    • That there are no restrictions to the ethanol fuel burning fully and cleanly. In particular, never cover the opening of the fuelbox with any accessories or other obstructions. This may change the quality of the combustion of the fuel.
    • That any accessories used on or inside the bio fire have been designed specifically for use in biofires. Whilst we recommend you only use accessories available through our website, we are aware that other products are available and have caused the triggering of some smoke/fire alarms.
  • What are the disadvantages of bioethanol?

As with any fuel, there are a few disadvantages of ethanol use that may be helpful to note. These include:

    • Efficiency: Biofuel fires tend not to get as hot as their wood-burning alternatives. They are, however, much more environmentally friendly and often much more attractive.
    • Cost: Biofuel is often a little more expensive than other fuels. However, its environmental and health credentials mean that many people are willing to pay a little extra. Remember to check our store regularly to see if we have any great offers on our bottles of bioethanol!

What are the risks of using ethanol?

Our biofires are built with your safety in mind. All fireplaces come with an instruction manual which we strongly advise you to read before using your biofire. Here’s two of the most important points for safe use of a biofire.

    • The main risk is trying to refuel your fuel box when it is already hot! To ensure that your fireplace remains safe at all times, you should only refuel your burner when it has returned to room temperature. (this can take up to 30 minutes depending on how long it has been used for, the specific model and other room conditions).
    • NEVER try to refuel a warm or hot fuel box with bioethanol.

Also, be sure to clean up any spillages created from filling the fuel box before lighting.  As a colourless liquid, it can be difficult to see if you have spilled any fuel, something that could risk the ignition of an uncontrolled flame. Even though our biofuel bottles are specially designed to minimise spills, accidents do happen, so please check for spills before lighting.

  • Where can I use my bioethanol fireplace?

Bioethanol fireplaces are extremely versatile, offering the beauty and cosiness of a real flame in rooms otherwise unable to accommodate a real fire.

The most significant USP of a biofire? You don’t need a flue or a chimney. So, bioethanol fireplaces are suitable for:

    • Houses without chimneys
    • Flats and Apartments
    • Conservatories
    • Outhouses
    • Outdoor spaces, such as patios and verandas

So, if your search for an additional source of heating has so far only resulted in options of bland or uninspiring gas or electric fireplaces, you may now like to also consider bioethanol burners, (sometimes also called bioethanol fireplace, or biofires) to elevate your living space.

Why don’t I need a flue for my biofire?

Many traditional wood- and coal-burning fireplaces offer cosiness and high heat outputs, but they also create a lot of mess and pollution that affects environmental air quality.

Additionally, when burning fossil fuels, you need a fully operational chimney or flue to ensure that any toxic gases and smoke are pushed out into the air outside rather than the room inside.

However, bioethanol fuel burns cleanly, producing:

    • a little water vapour (but not enough to create condensation in your room),
    • carbon dioxide (around the same amount as burning two candles), and
    • heat!

There are no installation costs or mess involved in burning bioethanol fuel in the correct type of fireplace.  And if you feel that a flue would complete the look of your wood-burner-style biofire, include a dummy flue with your order.

You’ll receive your biofire delivered to your door — from there, all you need to do is remove the packaging and light it! Simple.

Can I hang a biofire on the wall?

Yes. We offer beautiful wall-mounted biofires that attach to most interior walls, and you don’t need special skills to hang your biofire — just use the provided kit (including screws and wallplugs) and get warm and cosy within an hour or so.

Obviously, if DIY isn’t your thing, you might want someone to help — but anyone who knows how to hang a picture will have the skills to install their wall-mounted biofire.

Just like any fire, you’ll need sufficient wall space and at least 1m clearance of flammable materials, such as fabrics, curtains, and other soft furnishings.

We always recommend using your bioethanol fireplace in a ventilated room, but clear of drafts that can blow the flame out or in random directions, causing a potential fire hazard.

Where can I put a free-standing bioethanol fireplace?

Free-standing fireplaces are often portable, meaning you can use them in practically any room of the house (although we don’t recommend bioethanol fires for small bedrooms). Just ensure that you place your fireplace in an area clear of combustible items, such as curtains and soft furnishings.

Free-standing biofires usually have a glass-fronted door containing the flame inside. However, the flame occasionally licks out of the vent at the top of the unit. So, leave 1m between the top of your fireplace and anything flammable, such as a shelf or a TV.

Does a bioethanol fireplace need a hearthstone?

No — you don’t need a hearth stone for your biofire.

Remember: your bioethanol fireplace produces a real flame, so place it on a secure floor and in a place where you can’t knock it over.

Never move (or refill) your biofire while it’s lit — always leave it to cool down before you move it (or refill it).

Like all real flames, biofires use oxygen to burn — so we recommend using your biofire in a well-ventilated room. Keep an internal door open if you don’t want to open a window.

  • Can I use a biofire outdoors?

Many of our customers do use their bioethanol fire outdoors, but please remember to position them well away from any flammable items, especially those models that have an open front. There may be an unexpected gust of wind that could cause a fire if the flame touches anything flammable!

Also whilst there is the same amount of heat generated by ethanol fires when used outdoors as indoors, the space being heated is obviously much larger and therefore the heat level will feel less than when used indoors.

So if being considered for outdoor purposes, usage of bioethanol fireplaces outdoors  should be mainly used to create a nice relaxing vibe for your space.

Advantages of Using Bioethanol Fireplaces Outdoors

Remember that another advantage of biofires is that since there is no smoke, and no chimney required, our freestanding range can be easily moved between indoors and outdoors.

Also, at the end of a pleasant summer evening, there's none of the somewhat overwhelming strong smell of smoke on clothes that some other alternatives leave you with!

  • What advantages do Imaginfires products have over other manufacturers?

Our biofires are carefully designed by us, and are exclusive to imaginfires. Our bioethanol fuel boxes are manufactured from a very high grade stainless steel and double lined for additional safety and longevity. The closing mechanism on the fuel box is of a thickness and quality that most other fuel boxes simply do not have. They also have a high grade ceramic fibre lining which helps extend burn time and creates a consistent flame. Many other fuel boxes use a low grade ceramic which quickly wears out and is extremely difficult to replace. Our products are tested to the BS EN16647:2015 safety standard, and we work extremely closely with a cross-European team of Bioethanol Industry specialists to regularly review and improve the standard to keep up with the latest developments in the industry. We're not aware of any other UK company that does that!

  • How quickly can I expect to be using a bio ethanol fireplace when it arrives?

Unlike traditional open fires and wood- or coal-burning stoves, there’s usually no installation required with a biofire burner!.

A typical fossil fuel burner creates lots of smoke, ash, and soot, so these fireplaces must be installed according to safety regulations before you light them. However, bioethanol fireplaces, like the gorgeous Hampton Grey, are designed for use straight out of the box (or with minimal installation).

So, in most cases, you’re ready to go in less than an hour.

How do I install my biofire?

    Installation is super-easy

Most of our biofires require no assembly; they come fully built and ready to go. Some items may require simple assembly, such as sliding a glass panel into a slot or putting the fuel box into its housing.

Either way, these tasks are elementary and suitable for most people with no DIY skills.

Simply remove the packaging, read the safety instructions, and decide where to place your biofire. Fill the fuel box with bioethanol fuel, and - hey presto - it’s ready to light and enjoy.

    That’s it.

Oh, and you don’t need a chimney or flue. Bioethanol burns cleanly, so there’s no need for an external exhaust system. However, we sell dummy flues if you want to reinforce that traditional look.

Our biofires simply work straight out of the box (and bioethanol is much easier to light than wood or coal!)

    Which biofires require installation?

Most of our bioethanol fireplaces work straight out of the box. This includes our woodburner-style fireplaces, freestanding fires, and fire baskets. Of course, always read the safety instructions to minimise the fire risk.

Always use high-quality bioethanol fuel in your biofire. Our premium quality low-odour bioethanol burns consistently, creating a comfortable, consistent heat with no bad smells.

Our wall-mounted biofires and fireplace suites require hanging on the wall before use. All wall-mounted units come with easy-read hanging instructions and all the fittings. You’ll need a drill to make holes in the wall.

Can I hang my wall-mounted biofire myself?

If you can hang a picture on the wall, you can mount your biofire. Very basic DIY skills are required, but we’ve designed our range of biofires with simplicity first.

We consider mounting a biofire a two-person job for best results. If you doubt your DIY skills, ask a friend or family member.

  • Are ethanol fireplaces any good?

A real fireplace adds instant cosiness and that comfortable, welcoming " hygge" to any room. But not all homes have chimneys and many buildings, such as flats or terraces, are unsuitable for flue installations. Either way, installing a real fire into your home can cost thousands — especially if you're having your chimney lined or a flue installed.

Bioethanol has transformed how we warm our homes because it's possible to "install" a beautiful bioethanol fireplace without a chimney or flue.

    Why?

Because bioethanol is a clean-burning carbon-neutral fuel — easy and quick to install and enjoy. In fact, installation is simply a case of removing the packaging and placing your biofire in your chosen spot. Always read the easy-to-follow instructions, of course, to ensure safe use.

So, from a cost and convenience perspective, yes — bioethanol fireplaces are a fantastic choice. They are also seen as increasingly convenient way of heating a room with that real-flame pleasure.

What are the pros of a bioethanol fireplace?

It's always important to do your research when making an investment that enhances your home. So, we'll help answer some of your questions — starting with the benefits of bioethanol fireplaces.

    The pros:

    • You don't need a chimney. They say there's no smoke without fire, but in the case of bioethanol, there's no smoke with fire!
    • Installation is simple — no expensive technicians to hire! And you're not confined to a chimney breast — place your bioethanol fireplace wherever you like. Just make sure you follow the guidance that comes with your fireplace. But if you do want a flue to complete the look, look no further
    • Bioethanol burns cleanly , emitting none of the nasty chemicals or carcinogens associated with wood or coal burning. Burning bioethanol produces a little water vapour and around the same amount of carbon dioxide as two candles.
    • Ethanol fires do not produce ash or soot , so there's no cleaning and very little maintenance, unlike wood or coal fires. The glass remains clean, so you'll always be able to enjoy the flame.
    • Ethanol fires are easy . Floorstanding models are up and running within a few minutes of receiving them. Even wall-mounted biofires can be attached to your wall in an hour, using the included fixings (you'll need a drill!).
    • Bioethanol fires produce controllable heat . Bioethanol fireplaces kick out a surprising amount of heat, but we don't recommend them as a replacement for your central heating - one fire won't heat your whole house. You can easily control the flame with the fuel box slider — much more controllable than wood or coal.
    • Bioethanol fires produce around 3kW of heat - roughly the same as an electric fire on a medium setting. It depends on the size of the room you're heating and where you place it, but our Trustpilot reviews confirm how surprised (and thrilled) our customers are with the amount of heat their ImaginFires bioethanol fire produces.
    • ImaginFires bioethanol fireplaces are beautiful pieces of furniture . Whether lit or unlit, your stylish ImaginFires product looks great, enhancing your living space with its great looks. We put a lot of thought into our range of biofires and have focused on developing styles we would love to have in our own homes.

What are the drawbacks of bioethanol fireplaces?

Of course, there are always some cons to consider when investing in your home. So, think about the potential drawbacks of biofires.

    The Cons:

    • Biofires are not designed to replace your central heating . If you want a heat source for constant use, we wouldn't suggest using a biofire — their primary purpose is a top-up heat source. Many of our customers run their central heating low (around 18ºC) with the radiator turned off in the room with the biofire, and use their bioethanol fireplace to heat their most used room. That way, you'll have a toasty living room (for example) while the rest of the house will remain tolerably warm. Why heat the whole home if you're only using one room?
    • Biofires are not suitable for very small air-tight rooms . Bioethanol burns oxygen from the air to aid combustion, so you need to maintain some ventilation while using your fire. Keeping an internal door open, for example, will usually suffice. We don't recommend biofires for bedrooms. Other heating approaches may be more suitable.
    • You need to top up your biofuel . While refilling your biofire is pretty straightforward, a litre of bioethanol lasts only 3 to 4 hours. While this is fine for an evening, you will also need to refill it if you burn it during the day. Never refill over a lit flame — wait until the flame has gone out entirely and the fuel box has cooled down.
  • Are bio ethanol fireplaces suitable for Timber frame houses?

Just like you’ll find roaring log fires in wood cabins in the mountains, bioethanol fireplaces are safe in timber-framed houses as long as you adhere to the appropriate safety measures.

If you fit a wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace, such as our popular Henley Black, you'll need to ensure the wall can easily take the weight of the fireplace and that the correct screws and plugs for your particular construction are used. If in doubt seek help from your local diy store or reputable local builder.

If you are looking for a freestanding woodburner style fireplace such as the Hampton Black then just place it 10cm off the wall to allow the air to circulate around the fireplace.

    Are bioethanol fires safe?

Bioethanol fires are no different from wood or coal fires - you must practice caution when burning any fuel. Most people use a fireguard in front of a wood- or coal-burning fire to prevent hot embers from leaping out of the fire and onto your carpet but there are no embers with bioethanol fireplaces.

    Does bioethanol burn cleanly?

There’s literally no chance of flying embers with bioethanol fires because the fuel is just a liquid and burns cleanly, leaving no soot, ash, or smoke. So, as long as you adhere to common-sense safety measures, a bioethanol fireplace is very safe.

For most efficient burning and maximum safety, avoid placing your fireplace near draughts and away from curtains - the fireplace does get hot to the touch!

Safety (23)

  • Is the flame on a bioethanol fireplace real?

Yes, absolutely. Its a real flame, so you need to exercise common sense. You need to treat them with the same level of care as any open fire source (ensuring any flammable items are out of reach, not touching the flame or surround when it is alight).  We strongly advise that you read the manual supplied with your bioethanol fireplace. Please contact us if you need another copy and we would be more than happy to supply one. If you want further advice on remaining safe around a Biofire, you can read our more detailed article : www.imaginfires.co.uk/blog/how-to-safely-use-a-bioethanol-fireplace

  • Will a bioethanol fireplace trigger my smoke alarm?

High-quality bioethanol fuel burns cleanly, meaning it doesn’t produce smoke, ash, soot, or any mess. So, as long as you use your bioethanol fireplace in line with our safety guidance, it won’t produce smoke and — therefore — won’t set off your smoke alarm.

As long as you burn bioethanol approved for use in bioethanol fireplaces, it’s completely safe to burn in the home as a heat source.

Will my bioethanol fireplace trigger my carbon monoxide alarm?

As long as you burn bioethanol approved for indoor use, such as ImagiFuel, you can be safe knowing that your fire won’t produce carbon monoxide.

And while burning bioethanol fuel produces some carbon dioxide, it’s only the same amount as you’d create from burning two candles. You’ll find that your houseplants thrive because they absorb carbon dioxide from the air to help them photosynthesise.

Bioethanol uses oxygen in the air to complete combustion, so we recommend opening an internal door while burning to maximise oxygen flow. If the room feels stuffy, open a window for a couple of minutes to encourage airflow.

However, some customers install carbon monoxide alarms in the same room as their biofire for peace of mind.

Some tips for safe bioethanol fuel use

Your bioethanol fireplace won’t produce smoke.

So, if you do spot smoke coming from your fireplace, we recommend you check:

    • Nothing has fallen into the fuel box, such as paper or anything else flammable (apart from bioethanol fuel).
    • You’re using a high-grade bioethanol fuel specifically manufactured for bioethanol fireplaces. Never use gels, fragrance oils, or other non-approved fuels in your biofire. However, we supply scented bioethanol if you want a pleasant ambient aroma.
    • Nothing is obstructing or restricting the burn area of your fuel box. Keep all accessories, such as ceramic logs and stones, away from the burning aperture — this could affect combustion quality.
    • All accessories placed inside or on top of your biofire are designed for exposure to heat and flame. All ImaginFires accessories are suitable for use inside the burning chamber, but we are aware that other inferior products have triggered smoke alarms. Remove any non-approved accessory if your smoke alarm sounds.
  • How do I extinguish the flame on my biofire?

Controlling your bioethanol flame is simple because your ImaginFires fireplace comes installed with a specialist fuel box.

The stainless steel fuel box has a shutter that you close to shut off the flame. This provides way more control over the heat output and fuel efficiency than a traditional wood-burning stove or open fire.

You can actually switch your bioethanol fireplace OFF before you go to bed, saving money on wasted fuel.

    Controlling your bioethanol flame

You’ll find that a litre of premium-quality bioethanol fuel will last for around 3.5-4 hours with the heat aperture fully open. Your biofire running at full flame produces around 3kWh of heat - roughly equivalent to an electric fire on medium.

Of course, a thermostatically-controlled electric fire typically switches itself on and off to maintain your desired heat, so you may find that your biofire warms your room too much at full aperture.

Running your bioethanol fireplace at half-flame

It’s possible to control your biofire by half-closing the shutter, which reduces the heat output and the size of the flame.

However, we have found that the yellowness of the flame increases when you half-close the heating aperture, so you still get that beautiful cosy flame effect without too much heat.

How to extinguish the flame on my biofire safely

When you purchase an ImaginFire bioethanol fireplace, you’ll receive accessories that help operate your fire safely, including a specially designed “hook” that you should use to close your fire’s shutter. This extinguishes the flame immediately, but you should leave it for a couple of minutes to cool down before refilling.

Always use the supplied tool to extinguish the flame. Never use your hands or any body part to do this, as the fuel box will be very hot.

And do not move the bio fire until the stainless steel fuel box has cooled.

Why don't the flames go out when i close the shutter ?

The shutter on your fuel box should snuff out the flame of your bioethanol fireplace because it effectively cuts off the air supply to the flame. All flames need oxygen for combustion — a flame wouldn't burn, for example, in a vacuum.

However, the slider may not instantly snuff out the flame because the seal between the shutter and the fuel box isn't airtight.

The slider is purposely non-airtight to make closing the shutter easy — an airtight seal would create too much friction and melt when exposed to the flame.

  • Can I put my TV above a bioethanol fireplace?

We recommend leaving at least 45cm between the television and the fireplace if you’re installing a TV above a bioethanol fireplace. And while bioethanol fireplaces don’t get as hot as traditional wood or coal burners, they still give off plenty of heat, which could damage a TV if hung too close.

    Closed-top bioethanol fireplaces

For the safest installation, choose a bioethanol fireplace with a closed top, such as our wall-mounted Marlow range, which adds a stylish, contemporary aesthetic to any room. Alternatively, select one of our wood-burner-style freestanding fireplaces, such as the Hampton or Malvern, for a more traditional finish to your living space.

Keep wires and cables clear of your bioethanol fireplace

When finalising your TV installation project, keep all electrical wires and leads away from your bioethanol fireplace because the housing gets very hot, which could easily cause cords to overheat, creating a fire hazard.

    Bioethanol is smoke-free

Bioethanol fuel doesn't create smoke, ash, or soot when burnt. This means a bioethanol fireplace under a TV poses no smoke risk to your equipment.

How our customers have installed their TV above bioethanol fireplaces

Check out our customer pictures to get inspiration for installing a TV above a bioethanol fireplace.

Many of our customers have chosen bioethanol fires to fill a previously unused fireplace inglenook - giving them the beauty and warmth of a real fire without needing a chimney or ventilation.

Wall-mounted bioethanol fireplaces are easy to install. Simply unbox your fireplace and hang it on the wall using the supplied fixtures. Then, fill it with fuel, and you're ready to go.

Our freestanding fireplaces are even easier to install. Just unbox, fill with fuel, and light!

  • Can I pour bioethanol fuel on top of existing fuel?

NEVER !!  This is extremely dangerous, so never pour any fuel on top of a flame/ existing fire. Always allow the existing flame to be extinguished fully and the fuel fuel box to be cooled before adding any more bio fuel.

Also, take extreme care that, before lighting the biofire, the bioethanol fuel bottle is removed from the area, at least 3 metres away.

  • How should I store the bioethanol fuel?

Bioethanol is highly flammable, and we recommend caution in using and storing your fuel. Most bioethanol is supplied in air-tight bottles — the bottle must be air-tight, as ethanol evaporates if left open to the air.

Always store your bioethanol fuel away from potential fire sources and out of reach of children, pets, and animals.

All bioethanol supplied in the UK has a denaturing agent added — this makes the liquid poisonous, so NEVER drink bioethanol fuel.

Can I store bioethanol in the house?

You can store sealed bottles of bioethanol in the house, as long as it’s away from any potential source of fire and extreme heat. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard.

Never store bioethanol within 3m of your fireplace or any other heat/flame source.

Many people store their bioethanol fuel in their garage or garden shed. If you’re keeping it outside, ensure it remains in the shade, away from direct sunlight.

    Can I use cold bioethanol?

If you’ve stored your bioethanol outside, the liquid may become too cold to light successfully. Bring it to room temperature (below 15°C) before you light it — that way, it will ignite more quickly.

The cheapest way to buy bioethanol fuel is in bulk — bringing the cost per litre down considerably. Many retailers sell individual 1-litre bottles for around £5-7. However, bought in bulk, you can bring the price of a litre of bioethanol fuel down to about £4. If you purchase 12 litres of our own-brand fuel, ImagiFuel, it costs just £3.75 per litre.

Some of our customers store the majority of their fuel in the garage. However, we suggest transferring a couple of bottles at a time into the house to ensure that your fuel is at room temperature before you light it.

How do I dispose of bioethanol?

Never dispose of bioethanol in your household drains. Please refer to your local council’s guidelines on the disposal of flammable/poisonous liquids.

Note that any unused fuel left in the fuel box will evaporate over time as it is an alcohol-based product.

  • Can I add an accelerant to the bioethanol fire?

NO NEVER !! It is extremely dangerous to use any accelerants on your fire. You should only ever use bioethanol fuel inside the fireplace.

  • Can I put a shelf above the fireplace?

Bioethanol fuel burns completely cleanly, leaving no soot, ash, or smoke. So, there’s no chance of smoke damage to a shelf above a fireplace.

It’s safe to install a shelf above a closed-topped bioethanol fire, such as our wood burner-style biofires or our popular wall-mounted Marlow range. To prevent overheating, you should leave a minimum of 50cm between the top of the fire and the underside of the shelf.

Can I put a shelf above an open biofire?

While we don’t recommend installing a shelf above an open biofireplace insert, you should leave at least 1m between the flame and the shelf if you do install one. Ensure that all flammable materials, such as curtains, are kept at least 1m from the flame.

Remember, curtains in front of an open window can flap in the breeze - ensure there's no way the curtains can reach the open flame.

We suggest practising the same caution as you would with any domestic open flame.

  • Why has the glass shattered on my fireplace?

We use toughened safety glass manufactured and tested to withstand temperatures that far exceed the heat output of a bioethanol fire. So, under normal use, the glass will not shatter, degrade, or become dirty.

However, shattering of the grass may occur if it has taken an impact or been knocked accidentally. It could be that the damage is not immediately noticeable, but continued use may progressively weaken the glass's performance, increasing the risk of shattering. Regularly check your glass for any signs of small fractures or cracks, especially after it may have been knocked. Contact us for a repalcement if any problems are seen.

Keep fireplace accessories away from the glass

Under normal use, the glass supplied with your ImaginFires biofire should never crack, split, or shatter. However, ensure that all fireplace accessories, such as ceramic pebbles or logs, are clear of the glass.

Don't let anything touch the glass while your fire is burning (even approved accessories), as this could cause damage to the glass. That goes for the outside of your fireplace — make sure nothing touches the glass while your fireplace is heating your room.

Can I get the glass replaced for my bioethanol fireplace?

If your fireplace glass has become damaged or shattered, don't hesitate to contact us for a replacement.

  • Why don't the flames go out when i close the shutter ?

The shutter on your ImaginFires fuel box should snuff out the flame of your bioethanol fireplace because it effectively cuts off the air supply to the flame.

So, how do I extinguish the flame of my biofire?

If the flames don't go out immediately, don't panic. Things aren't going wrong! :) If you leave the fuel box closed, the fire will go out.

Leave the shutter closed for at least three minutes, and the flames will die and go out entirely. Avoid opening and shutting the slider — just draw it closed, and the fire will extinguish.

How do I close the slider on my biofire?

Always use the closing tool supplied with your ImaginFires bioethanol fireplace. NEVER close the slider with your hand.

Remember, both the fuel box and the body of your biofire remain too hot to touch for at least twenty minutes after extinguishing the flame. So, treat your biofire with the same respect you would for a traditional wood burner or open fire.

Biofires don't get as hot as traditional wood-burning stoves, but they still get way too hot to touch. Always practice caution when using your bioethanol fireplace, and always wait for the fuel box to cool down completely before refilling with more bioethanol fuel

If the fuel box or shutter is damaged, DO NOT USE! Contact us for a replacement.

  • Are ethanol fireplaces dangerous?

All fireplaces are dangerous if used carelessly or without the appropriate precautions. And bioethanol fireplaces require precisely the same level of caution for use. But operated in accordance with safety guidelines, your bioethanol fireplace is perfectly safe to use in the home.

Bioethanol fireplaces are extremely easy to use and operate without creating smoke, ash, soot, or any mess to clean up.

We supply an easy-read instruction manual with all of our bioethanol fireplaces, which MUST be read  fully by anyone using the fireplace for the first time.

What precautions should I take when using a bioethanol fireplace?

Our comprehensive manual includes everything you need to know to operate your bioethanol fireplace safely. The main points to follow are:

    • Always wait until the fuel box has cooled to room temperature before refilling
    • Never refill the fuel box if the flame is still burning
    • Don’t overfill the fuel box
    • Mop up any biofuel spillages before you light the flame
    • Install or place your bioethanol fireplace away from curtains and soft furnishings that could ignite

We’ve designed our fuel boxes with a patented non-spill feature, which helps minimise the possibility of spillage as you refill. It also keeps the fuel inside the fuel box if the fireplace is accidentally knocked or moved.

Keep a carbon monoxide/dioxide detector in the room for additional peace of mind. Many of our customers have these detectors anyway, as they are handy for detecting other potential sources of pollutants commonly found in homes.

  • Do ethanol fireplaces need to be vented?

Bioethanol fuels burn cleanly, leaving no residue, ash, smoke, or any of the mess associated with wood or coal-burning fires. As such, there’s no need for fireplace venting. These are called ventless fireplaces. A ventless biofuel fireplace is simply a fireplace that does not require a chimney, flue or any other venting duct.

Bioethanol uses oxygen in the room to combust, emitting a small amount of carbon dioxide and some water vapour. While there are no fumes, keeping the space ventilated by opening a door or keeping a window slightly open during use is recommended.

Do I need a vented fireplace?

Bioethanol fireplaces do not require a venting system with a chimney or flue as they do not emit harmful emissions, unlike a traditional wood burner.

We suggest you refresh the air if using regularly by opening a small window in between refills.

Whether wood, coal, gas, or bioethanol, all fires produce carbon dioxide. The levels from a bioethanol fire are roughly equivalent to burning two candles, so it’s simply not enough to be harmful to your health.

  • Are log burners dangerous?

Log burners carry considerably more health and safety risks than biofires, mainly because they are designed to emit a far higher amount of heat, and also they usually burn wood, which of course is a source of smoke and various particulate matter.

They are far more difficult to install, and usually this should only be done by a recognised professional.  Nevertheless, if they are installed correctly, and maintained regularly, then they are built to provide a primary source of heat.

Bioethanol fireplaces, on the other hand, are designed for use as a secondary heat source, and not intended for regular use. They are also not intended to perform in the same way as a woodburner.  There are of course still some important health and safety issues to be aware of even when using a biofire, but we feel the combination of common sense, and reading the safety manual, results in bio fires being an ideal, safer, secondary heat source.

  • Can I put any cables or leads behind my biofire?

The body of your biofire gets very hot, so we strongly advise you against putting leads or cables behind or underneath your bioethanol fireplace. Heat from the fire can lead to malfunction or even pose a fire risk, especially from power leads. If you absolutely cant avoid putting cables behind a biofire for any reason, we suggest housing them in a fireproof conduit/cable protector.

Can I hang a TV over my bioethanol fireplace?

We recommend leaving at least 45cm between the top of your biofire and a wall-mounted TV — this ensures that your TV set doesn’t overheat.

We recommended placing biofires with a closed top beneath the TV. There are many examples of these in our range.

How much space do I need around my biofire?

Unlike traditional fireplaces, there aren’t currently any regulations dictating the clearance distance between a biofire and the wall or other items.

Nonetheless, we advise practising caution around fire, especially if your biofire is “open”, such as our fire baskets, some of our freestanding models, and our bioethanol fireplace suites

We recommend leaving at least 60cm above and (if possible) around the sides and front of your biofire.

Never place your bioethanol fire close to combustible materials such as soft furnishing and curtains. Remember that curtains can flap in the breeze from an open window, so make sure there’s at least 1m clearance between your fireplace and the furthest reach of your curtains.

How far from the wall should my biofire be?

If your biofire is portable, it’s OK to store it directly against the wall — however, make sure it has cooled down after use first.

Always leave at least 10cm between the back of the fireplace and your wall — this ensures good air circulation around the fire, assisting it in warming your living space.

  • The glass on my biofire has been damaged, can I still use it?

The glass on our biofires is designed to withstand temperatures far higher than the heat from a biofire, so under normal use it will not crack from the heat. However, if it has been chipped or damaged in some way, for example an object has knocked into it, it may have become weaker, sometimes even with no visible signs of damage. This would then in turn risk the glass cracking or shattering. If you suspect this is the case with your glass, please contact us for a replacement.

  • How do you safely dispose of bioethanol fuel?

To safely dispose of bioethanol fuel, follow these steps:

    • Allow the fuel to cool: Ensure the bioethanol fuel has completely cooled down to room temperature before disposal.
    • Store in a dedicated container: Use a dedicated container designed for bioethanol fuel to minimise the risk of spills or leaks. Ideally keep the biofuel in the bottle it came in. Decanting to other bottles that have not been approved for the use of ethanol based contents is not recommended.
    • Check local regulations: Consult local authorities or waste management facilities to understand specific procedures and requirements for disposal.
    • Contact recycling or hazardous waste facilities: Inquire with local recycling or hazardous waste facilities about their processes for disposing of bioethanol fuel.

  • How do you properly transport a bioethanol fireplace?

Transporting a bioethanol fireplace requires careful handling to ensure its safety and integrity during transit.

Steps to securely transporting a bioethanol fireplace

    • Preparation: Before transporting the fireplace, ensure that the burner is completely cool and empty of any bioethanol fuel. It's crucial to prevent any spillage or leakage during transport.
    • Disassembly (if possible): If your bioethanol fireplace is designed to be disassembled, carefully take it apart. Securely pack all parts, including any glass panels, to prevent damage during transportation.
    • Protection for glass panels: If your fireplace has glass panels, use appropriate padding or covers to protect them from potential breakage during transport.
    • Secure positioning: When loading the fireplace into a vehicle, ensure it is placed in a stable position to prevent movement during transit. Avoid stacking heavy objects on top of the fireplace.
    • Avoid extreme temperatures: During transport, avoid leaving the fireplace in extreme temperatures, such as direct sunlight or freezing conditions, as this may damage the materials.
    • Gentle handling: Lift and carry the fireplace with care, avoiding any sudden movements or impacts. Delicate handling will help preserve the fireplace's integrity and prevent accidental damage or injury.

For more detailed instructions on transporting your specific bioethanol fireplace model, refer to the manufacturer's transportation guidelines.

  • How do you properly transport bioethanol fuel bottles?

Transporting bioethanol fuel bottles safely is essential to avoid spills and accidents during transit. This allows your bioethanol fireplace to be used more efficiently.

Key steps for transporting bioethanol fuel bottles

    • Secure sealing: Before transporting bioethanol fuel bottles, ensure the caps are tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Double-check that all caps are properly closed and secure.
    • Dedicated container: Use a dedicated container designed for bioethanol fuel transport. This will help keep the bottles upright and prevent tipping during transit.
    • Sunlight and heat: Store the fuel bottles away from direct sunlight and heat sources while transporting them. Exposure to extreme temperatures can affect the fuel's quality.
    • Ignition sources: Keep the fuel bottles away from any potential ignition sources, such as flames or sparks, during transportation.
    • Compliance with regulations: Always comply with local regulations and guidelines regarding the transportation of flammable liquids. Be aware of any specific rules or restrictions in your area.
    • Empty burners: Never transport bioethanol burners with fuel inside, even if they are sealed. Empty the burners before transport to avoid any spillage or leakage.

For more detailed information on the safe handling and transportation of bioethanol fuel bottles, please refer to our fuel safety FAQs.

  • How do you properly store bioethanol fuel bottles?

Properly storing your bioethanol fuel bottles is essential to maintain their quality and safety.

Proper storage practices for bioethanol fuel bottles

    • Proper storage environment: Store the bioethanol fuel bottles in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This stable environment helps preserve the fuel's quality.
    • Secure storage: Ensure the fuel bottles are stored in a location inaccessible to children and pets. This precaution prevents accidental contact and potential accidents.
    • Tight sealing: Always securely seal the bioethanol fuel bottles after use to prevent evaporation and leakage. This also reduces the risk of spills during storage or transportation.
    • Checking expiry date: Regularly check the expiration date of the bioethanol fuel and avoid using any that have passed the specified date. Using expired fuel can compromise burning efficiency and safety.
    • Responsible disposal: When a bioethanol fuel bottle is empty or expired, adhere to regulations for proper disposal. Check with the manufacturer’s recommendations and your local waste management facility to follow appropriate guidelines.

By adhering to these recommended storage practices, you ensure the longevity and safety of your bioethanol fireplace setup.

  • What fire extinguisher should be used in any emergency?

Bioethanol fireplaces are perfectly safe, as long as you comply with the safety recommendations:

    • Never refill a lit bioethanol fireplace.
    • Wait until the flame has gone out and the fuel box has cooled down before refilling.

Your bioethanol fireplace gets hot, so take extra care around soft furnishings such as curtains, rugs, and cushions. Ensure that your curtains can’t reach your fireplace in a breeze and practice common sense when opening your fireplace’s door.

You can control your flame size with the fuel box slider. If you need less heat, move the slider to its halfway position. Or close the slider completely to extinguish the flame if you no longer want to heat the room.

In the unlikely event of a fire, use a foam fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

Delivery (9)

  • I didnt get everything I ordered!

We're aware that some customers may experience 'split deliveries' from our couriers. This means that sometimes accessories or biofuel does not arrive at the same time as the biofire, but usually within 72 hours later, or indeed sometimes before the fireplace. We are doing all we can to eliminate this, but as couriers comtinue to be under a huge amount of pressure this year, it is unlikely to resolve soon.  If this happens to you, PLEASE allow 72hours to receive the missing items before contacting us , AND PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE YOUR ORDER NUMBER . We really appreciate your understanding at this time and apologise for any inconvenience.

  • How long does delivery take?

We aim to deliver our beautiful bioethanol fireplaces, suites, and fire baskets within 7 days of receiving your order, and in many cases, within 3 working days.  The product page shows the latest expected number of days before delivery, which is regulary checked with our couriers to ensure the information is as accurate as possible.

How can I tell how long I'll need to wait for my biofire?

Look for the little van symbol above the "Add to Cart" button on our bioethanol fireplaces page This will confirm the expected waiting duration, but it could change for reasons beyond our control.

How will I be notified of my delivery?

Once your order ships, you will receive a text or email message from one of our couriers, (UK Mail/DHL/DX), notifying you of the intended day of delivery. The email message includes a link on how to change the delivery day if necessary (but not to weekends). The text message will include just the planned delivery day. Our couriers will attempt delvery twice before the item(s) are held in a depot awaiting your contact for redelivery.

Why can't ImaginFires guarantee a delivery date?

While we will always do our very best to fulfill your order within the stated time, some items may take longer. This is due to a range of variables beyond our control, including changes in traffic conditions due to weather or courier staffing levels.

We base our expected delivery dates on the latest information from our shipping partners and preffered couriers (usually DX) , and while we do all we can to fulfil those timescales, they're occasionally subject to change.

We are currently unable to offer any weekend deliveries.

Will I receive all my items at the same time?

In the majority of cases, all items on your order will arrive together. However, during busy periods if you order a biofire and accessories such as logs, pebbles or biofuel, they do sometimes get deliberately separated by the courier, but then get delivered within 72 hours of the first item arriving.

Can I contact ImaginFires about my order?

Of course. If there's a delay on your order, if you have any questions about your order, or if you have aftercare questions about a completed order, don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

  • Do you deliver to Europe?

After many years of successfully delivering all over Europe, 2021 has seen a large increase in rejections of attempted deliveries of our bio fires from UK to Europe, due mainly to the current confusion of what the process and paperwork must now involve. We are working hard to resolve the situation, and are seeking clarity from couriers, and relevant government departments, but there is still no clear way for us to continue as before. Regrettably for now we are not able to accept any European orders.

  • What if I need a weekend or guaranteed delivery time?

Sorry but we are currently unable to offer any weekend deliveries . For weekday deliveries, once your order ships, you will receive an email or text message from one of our couriers, with a planned 1 hour delivery slot. Bio Fuel (14)

  • Do bioethanol fireplaces smell?

It depends on the type of bioethanol fuel you choose. High-quality bioethanol doesn\’t have a strong ethanol smell during combustion at all.

However, some cheap products may emit a mild paint-like odour.

The vast majority of our customers are delighted with the aromas emitted from our biofires ; especially when they use one of our very lightly fragranced fuels .

Can you make ethanol smell good?

You should never add any fragrance oils to your bioethanol fuel, as this can create unpleasant fumes that could affect your health.

However, our range of lightly perfumed bioethanol fuels smell delightful without becoming overpowering.

So, what does a bio ethanol fireplace smell like when it burns?

Some biofuels give off a more pungent smell than others, so please check you are using a high-quality brand of biofuel from a recognised, trusted source.

However, you may notice a mild chemical smell when your fuel box burns to empty. Most of our customers consider the burnout aroma well within acceptable levels, but you could simply open a window briefly to let the smell escape if you\’re not keen.

  • What should I do if there any biofuel spillages?

You should always ensure the bioethanol fire and surrounding area are free of any spillages and the area is completely dry. Ensure that you only pour biofuel into the correct parrt of the steel fuel box. Take care also not to spill biofuel down any side gaps of the fuel box . If this happens, then this fuel may also light and flames could come from the side gaps of the fuel box. Just use some kitchen towel or similar to clear away any spillages.

  • How long does bioethanol fuel burn for?

Typically, 1 litre of bioethanol fuel burns for around 3.5 to 4 hours (with the shutter fully open).

Closing the fuel box lid halfway increases the burn duration, but reduces the heat output and the flame size.

  • How much fuel does a bioethanol fireplace need?

It depends on the size of your bioethanol fireplace, but our fireplaces provide a capacity of 1 litre of bioethanol fuel. This usually lasts for around 3-4 hours on full flame.

How long does a litre of bioethanol fuel last?

Generally speaking, 1 litre of bioethanol fuel will burn for around 3-4 hours — but it depends on the quality of the fuel. ImagiFuel is our own-brand bioethanol, offering a superior burn costing around £3.75 per litre if you buy in bulk.

If you half-close the fuel box slider, the flames will be smaller, and the fuel will last longer.

Of course, you can get cheaper fuel for your bioethanol fireplace, but you get what you pay for — you may get shorter burn times and an unpleasant odour from cheaper fuel, making it a false economy to buy cheaper.

Our bioethanol burns cleanly with an extremely low odour. We also sell scented biofuel with delightful vanilla, forest, or Christmas fragrances.

  • What is liquid bioethanol fuel?

Both ethanol and bioethanol are alcohol — basically the same thing. However, bioethanol intended for fuel has an added denaturant that prevents human consumption.

Bioethanol is made by fermenting the by-products of sugar and starch-bearing plants, such as cereals, sugar beet, maize, soybeans, wheatstraw, and corn, and has been used as a fuel for vehicles and heating systems since 1978. Considered a renewable source, burning bioethanol produces none of the toxic gasses associated with traditional fossil fuels.

Bioethanol burns cleanly without producing smoke, soot, or ash. In its liquid form, it leaves no residue, so there’s no cleaning up with a bioethanol fireplace.

Is it safe to burn bioethanol inside?

The bioethanol supplied for bioethanol fireplaces, such as our own-brand ImagiFuel, is entirely safe for indoor fireplaces, which need neither a chimney nor a flue.

For this reason, bioethanol is the perfect choice for people who want a real fire but can’t install a chimney — excellent for use in an apartment, flat, or conservatory. You can get the look of a traditional fireplace or a wood-burning stove without all the mess and pollution associated with burning wood or coal. You can even get wall-mounted bioethanol fires that complement modern living spaces perfectly.

Can I use gel bioethanol in my biofire?

There are two types of commercially available bioethanol fuel: gel and liquid. Gel fuels have a thick, waxy consistency and are more often used for outdoor biofires and camping stoves. Gels generally produce smaller flames and don’t burn as powerfully as liquid bioethanol.

Gels leave traces of residue after burning, while liquid bioethanol burns completely cleanly, leaving no residue at all. For this reason, never use bioethanol gel in your ImaginFires bioethanol fireplace — it could be dangerous.

Is the flame from gel bioethanol different from liquid bioethanol?

As well as the difference in texture, liquid-based bioethanol produces a more aesthetically pleasing flame than gel-based fuels. Liquid bioethanol produces the same large orange flames as a traditional fire (once the fuel box has warmed up), while gel-based flames tend to remain blue and almost transparent.

Never use bioethanol gel in your ImaginFires fireplace. Only use liquid bioethanol approved for indoor use. And savour a safe, beautiful flame that transforms your living space with the unique cosiness of an open fire (without the existential guilt!).

  • Can you use denatured alcohol in an ethanol fireplace?

Yes. Denatured alcohol is essentially alcohol that has been rendered undrinkable to obviously discourage recreational consumption.

It should never be drunk as it is poisonous.

Effectively, the alcohol you drink and the alcohol you burn in a bioethanol fireplace are essentially the same. However, burning-grade bioethanol has an additive (such as methyl alcohol) included at the manufacturing stage that gives an unpleasant taste and/or smell to discourage drinking.

You'll find all ethanol and bioethanol sold for burning in the UK has been denatured which minimises the costs of manufacture because it doesn't need to be refined in the same way as consumption-grade alcohol.

Using denatured alcohol is perfectly acceptable for bioethanol fireplaces and recommended.

Check the purity of your bioethanol fuel for a longer and cleaner burn.

  • Can I use bioethanol gel with your fireplaces?

We have tested our bioethanol fireplaces extensively with liquid bioethanol and do not recommend using gels with any of our products.  Further, we have not tested our products to any of the British or European Standard requirements using any gel fuels, and thus we do not recommend them.

What's the difference between liquid bioethanol and gel?

Bioethanol liquid and bioethanol gel are essentially the same product, with differences in the fuel's viscosity. Both are made from bioethanol - a clean-burning carbon-neutral power source that effectively warms your home or the outside when burnt.

However, gels have a thickening agent added, which makes bioethanol a convenient no-spill medium for portable fires. Gels are often supplied in resealable and (sometimes) refillable tins — you place the container inside your fireplace or burner to enjoy a beautiful, gentle flame.

On the other hand, bioethanol liquid fuels are supplied in recyclable bottles and poured directly into your bioethanol fuel box. High-quality liquid bioethanol should be around 95% pure ethanol, with a denaturing agent that prevents human consumption.

Liquid bioethanol provides a consistent, warming flame that's easy to snuff out by using the slider on your fuel box.

Does bioethanol gel burn in the same way as liquid?

Gels tend to burn more slowly and less fiercely than liquid bioethanol because the thickening agent slows down the burning process.

Gels are great for outdoor burners, which can add charm and cosiness to your patio or garden, although they are suitable for some indoor bioethanol fireplaces. However, gels tend to produce less heat than liquids.

Can I use gel in an ImaginFires biofire?

ImaginFires bioethanol fireplaces are designed for liquid bioethanol only. We haven't tested gels for safety because our beautiful fireplaces are supplied with our premium-quality no-spill fuel box, allowing you to fill and burn your bioethanol fuel in the home safely.

We do not recommend the use of gels with any of our fireplaces.

  • Why can't I see any fuel when I pour it into the fuel box?

We're very proud of ImaginFire's fuel box. We believe it's a beautiful piece of engineering, with several internal and external sheaths designed to make using and fueling your bioethanol fireplace as simple and safe as possible.

Our "No Spill" fuel box conforms to European standards: BS EN 16647:2015, ensuring maximum safety and high manufacturing values.

So, when you fill your fuel box with bioethanol fuel, it's quickly absorbed into the inner lining of the steel box, helping prevent spillage if the fireplace is accidentally knocked or moved.

How much fuel can I pour into the fuel box?

The fuel box is a sealed unit, so when you pour your bioethanol fuel into the burning aperture, it appears to disappear into the void.

You should never see a fuel layer exceeding the MAX level indicator at the bottom of the burning aperture.

Our fuel boxes are designed to contain up to 1 litre of fuel. Don't be tempted to add more! One litre of ImaginFires bioethanol should burn in your beautiful bioethanol fireplace for around 3.5 hours with the slider open fully, and up to 5 hours if the slider is partially closed.

We sell scented bioethanol fuels as well as a standard low-odour fuel. Our scented fuels are available in Christmas, Vanilla, and Forest aromas

How is the fuel box constructed?

The ImaginFires no-spill fuel box is made of several parts:

    • Outer stainless steel liner — houses the main fuel tank.
    • Stainless steel inner tank — accommodates up to 1L of fuel, made from high-grade stainless steel.
    • Fibrack burning slot — this is the burning aperture, lined with an absorbent material that soaks up the fuel and permits control over the flame and safety from spillages.
    • Lower fascia plate — hand-welded for maximum safety and protection.
    • "Sure Slide' closing plate — designed for optimal flame-size control and shutting off the flame after use.
    • Upper fascia plate — sealing everything together.
  • Can i use scented fuel in a digital/electronic bioethanol fireplace?

Our scented fuel is not recommended for use in digital/electronic bioethanol fireplaces but our LOW ODOUR FUEL is suitable.

  • How should I clean up any fuel spillage?

Simple! Just wipe it up with a damp cloth and ensure that it is all cleared up before lighting your fireplace.

  • How much fuel should I put in the biofire?

Bioethanol fuel burns cleanly, producing a lovely warming flame that elevates the cosiness of your room. But a little forward planning will make your cosy night in more enjoyable.

How much bioethanol fuel should I pour into my biofire?

When you order your bioethanol fireplace, you’ll see the fuel capacity in the product’s Specifications section. The majority of our biofires come with 1 Litre no-spill fuel boxes

One litre of bioethanol fuel lasts between three and a half to five hours, depending on the position of the fuel box slider, which can narrow the burning aperture for less intense heat.

One litre of fuel will last around 3.5 hours if the burning aperture is fully open. One litre will last approximately 4-5 hours when you close the slider halfway.

Can I fill my biofire while it’s lit?

Never fill or refill your biofire while it’s burning — this is very dangerous!

Always store your bioethanol fuel bottles away from the fire itself — keep them in a cool, dry place, away from heat.

Always allow the biofire to cool down before you refill.

Can I use half a bottle of bioethanol in my biofire?

Yes. There’s no need to fill your biofire with fuel to the maximum level each time. If you’re only going to be using your fire for an hour or so, half a bottle of bioethanol will suffice.

Of course, one litre burns longer than half a litre. However, don’t be tempted to overfill your fuel box beyond it’s stated capacity.

Never fill the fuel box beyond the MAXIMUM level. There should be no visible liquid — it gets stored in the fuel box and absorbed into the ceramic wool inside the burning aperture.

Is there a minimum amount of bioethanol my biofire needs to light?

Yes. We don’t recommend using less than a quarter of a bottle of bioethanol fuel.

Too little fuel might not light (or stay lit).

  • Where can I buy bioethanol fuel?

Bioethanol fuel is widely available online and in some DIY stores, varying in price. Generally, we recommend buying your bioethanol in bulk - purchasing single-litre bottles is the most expensive way to stock up.

Our volatile energy market hasn’t impacted the price of bioethanol. So, buying in bulk gets you the best price for your heating and could save you money compared to gas or electricity.

Of course, the quality of bioethanol varies significantly, and poor-quality fuel offers shorter burn times and can give off an unpleasant odour.

Our own-brand bioethanol fuel is called ImagiFuel, and we consider it the best you can get (at a very competitive price). You will receive 10% off the cost of any fuel and accessories when you purchase a fireplace at the same time via our website.

    Does bioethanol fuel smell?

ImagiFuel bioethanol fuel burns cleanly, with a very low odour while burning. Sometimes, you'll notice a slight chemical smell when the flame goes out — this is typical of all bioethanol fuels.

Good quality bioethanol gives off a minimal odour that most people don't notice after using their fireplace a couple of times. However, cheap fuels can produce some unpleasant smells.

We also offer a range of scented fuels, with Vanilla, Forest, and Christmas fragrances — offering a delightful, cosy ambience while you heat your room.

Can I burn anything other than bioethanol in a bioethanol fireplace?

Please only use high-quality biofuels with at least 96.6% alcohol.

Never use any other fuel types, such as wood, paper, or coal in your bioethanol fireplace. These emit smoke, soot, and ash, which require a flue or chimney.

Bioethanol fireplaces don’t need an external flue or chimney. It’s entirely safe to burn ethanol indoors (as long as you ensure you stick to safety guidelines). However, you will need some ventilation to prevent stuffiness and let oxygen into the room while burning.

  • Does bioethanol fuel have any odour?

Bioethanol fuel has a fairly neutral smell when lit — some people claim that there’s no smell at all, but you will notice a mild, but not unpleasant, odour when you first light your bioethanol fireplace. Some people describe the smell as mildly “coconutty”, while others compare the scent to a burning candle.

Either way, you get used to the mild odour very quickly — literally going “nose-blind” to it after a short period. You don’t get any of the charred wood smell of an open fire — the odour is much less noticeable than a real fire.

    High-quality bioethanol for low odour

Of course, it depends on the quality of the fuel you choose to burn — if you buy cheap bioethanol, there may be a more noticeable smell. We recommend reading the reviews before purchasing any bioethanol fuel.

Our own-brand range, ImagiFuel, has a particularly low odour. We even sell scented biofuel with Vanilla, Forest, or Christmas aromas that pleasantly boost the cosiness of your room while you heat it.

What’s that smell when I light my biofire?

The first time you light your brand new biofire, you may notice a mild chemical like scent — don’t panic, this is normal as your fuel box “beds in”.

This smell is harmless and will disappear after you’ve lit your fire a couple of times.

What’s that smell when my biofire goes out?

High-quality bioethanol fuel emits very little-to-no odour while it’s burning, but you may notice a slight chemical tang to the air when the flames go out. This is normal and nothing to worry about. You may detect the same smell when you close the fuel box slider to snuff out the flame.

This smell will be noticeable when you first start using your bioethanol fireplace, but you get used to it after a couple of burns. You’ll hardly notice it after a while. If anything, it leaves a clean smell in the air, similar to when you have a new sofa delivered.

Bioethanol fuel uses oxygen in the air to combust and emits a small amount of water vapour and a little carbon dioxide (about the same amount as burning two candles). There’s none of the charred, burning smell of open fires or wood burners.

  • What is bioethanol fuel made of?

Bioethanol (also simply known as ethanol) is a renewable energy source with a string of green credentials, including using 100% plant raw materials. Ethanol is an alcohol produced by fermenting the sugars in various crops such as corn, wheat straw, potatoes, soybean, or sugarcane — often used to power cars and industrial engines.

But, of course, bioethanol is also the perfect fuel for your fire — the guilt-free way of heating your home.

The main difference between motor-grade ethanol that you may be more familiar with, and what we call bioethanol for your biofire is that bioethanol is made from the by-products of those crops — the waste parts of the plant typically thrown away.

    Does bioethanol create smoke?

In short — no. Bioethanol burns cleanly, mainly producing a trace amount of water vapour and carbon dioxide. This is why it’s safe to burn bioethanol in the home without a flue, extractor fan, or chimney.

Bioethanol uses oxygen in the air to burn (like conventional fires), so we recommend keeping the room ventilated to ensure airflow. And while burning bioethanol fuel produces a little carbon dioxide, it’s only the same amount as burning some regular candles.

    Is bioethanol explosive or drinkable?

We were surprised to be asked this so often! Bioethanol is a Class-1B liquid (for flammability) and Class-3 PGII (for transportation) and is “denatured” to prevent human consumption. Most bioethanol sold in the UK is at least 94% ethanol, with a denaturing agent which adds toxicity to stop people from drinking it!  So

Bioethanol isn’t explosive, but it is of course extremely flammable — it wouldn’t be much use if it weren’t, after all. We recommend storing your bioethanol fuel as far away from your biofire and other sources of ignition as possible.

    Is cheap bioethanol worth it?

Like all consumer products, you should buy the highest-quality bioethanol fuel that you can, which will help ensure it burns cleanly and also offers a decent number of hours burning time.

You will get at least 3.5 hours of heating from 1 litre of our biofuels. We have not tested lower quality bioethanol with our biofires, simply because we do not believe they are safe to use,  nor can their quality be relied on.

Accept nothing less than 94% pure bioethanol with no unnecessary chemicals added.

Using your Biofire (39)

  • How much space should I leave around a wall mounted Bioethanol Fireplace?

Some think a bioethanol fireplace is purely decorative, producing very little heat, but that's untrue. A bioethanol fireplace creates around 3kWh of heat from a real live flame, so you must practice the same caution you would for a traditional wood- or coal-burning flame.

Let's put that 3kWh into context:

Electric heater : a 1kW electric heater uses 1kWh in power and will heat a room of 10m². Most electric heaters are at least 2kW, use 2kWh in power, and will heat a space of 20m².

A bioethanol fireplace (on full) will heat a 30m² room comfortably. And just like an electric fire, you should practice caution regarding flammable objects placed nearby.

How much space should I leave around a wall-mounted fireplace?

Surprisingly, there aren't any specific legal regulations regarding the installation of a wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace. However, you should definitely practice common sense.

We recommend leaving at least 45cm between the top of your fire and electrical equipment, such as a TV. Practice the same caution for all flammable objects, with at least 60cm in all directions from your fireplace, especially if the flame is open, as with our wall-mounted Alden range.

Practice extra caution around curtains, which could reach your fire if they're disturbed by a breeze. Leave at least 1m between the furthest reach of the curtains and your bioethanol fireplace.

Ensure that the wall is strong enough to sustain the weight of the fireplace. For example, our Alden White model is 19kg in weight and comes with the appropriate fittings to ensure that you can safely attach it to the wall. However, your wall must be substantial enough to bear 19kg. In doubt, seek the advice of an engineer.

Can I fit my wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace underneath a TV?

    Absolutely.

However, we suggest you keep the following in mind as a minimum:

    • Remember: the flame of a biofire can behave erratically. A sudden draft could send the flame in an unexpected direction, so practice caution when opening your biofire's door. We suggest a minimum distance of 60cm between the top of the closed-top biofire and the bottom of the TV.
    • Recessing the TV into the wall may reduce the impact of heat on the TV.
    • We suggest you install a heat/flameproof item to separate the fire from the TV, such as a shelf with a flameproof covering.
    • Never put TV cables or leads behind your biofire, as they can overheat, creating a potential fire risk.
  • How do I light my bioethanol fireplace?

If you've ever lit a real fire, you'll know the pain of building kindling and firelighters and then trying to get it to light for long enough to add more fuel to the fire. Wood burners are usually much easier to light, but it can take a few attempts to get it burning fiercely.

Bioethanol fireplaces are a cinch in comparison. All you need to do is first check that there is no fuel from previous use either inside, around or underneath the fuel box.  If there is fuel INSIDE the fuel box, then we strongly suggest you light this first and allow it burn off.  If there is any sign of spilled or accumulated fuel AROUND or UNDERNEATH the fuel box, then clean that away first.  If your biofire has a secondary chamber / housing around the fuel box, please check this too.  Once you are happy that there is no biofuel remnant, you can now squeeze up to 1 litre of biofuel into the fuel box. Never fill past the 'max indicator on the fuel box, or in any case more than 1litre of fuel.  You're now ready to light it.  (we have a short video showing how to light it here).  You'll get small, blue flames at first, but they'll grow into beautiful, warming yellow flames once the fireplace has warmed up….usually within around 10 minutes but it depends on a few factors such as natural ventilation levels in the home, or the temperature of the fuel box.

Can I use matches to light my bioethanol fireplace?

Never use matches to light your bioethanol fireplace - if you drop the stick/match into the fuel box filter, it will give off smoke. The beauty of a bioethanol fireplace is that it creates no smoke, soot, or ash — you don't need a chimney or flue — so, you don't want to risk producing smoke inside your home.

We recommend using a refillable long-reach lighter — that way, your hand will be nowhere near the flame when it ignites. The sort of lighters that cost a £ or 2 from supermarkets or Amazon.

How long does it take to light a bioethanol flame?

After filling your bioethanol fuel box, lighting the fire is easy. The fuel gently ignites as soon as you expose it to the flame of your long-reach lighter. Remember that the fire will be small to start with - this is normal and will grow once the fireplace has warmed up.

The flame may go out if your bioethanol fireplace is very cold. Make sure there's no flame, then simply relight. The flame will take after the second lighting.

How big is a bioethanol flame?

While a bioethanol flame isn't as hot as a wood or coal flame, you'll enjoy large, yellow flames similar to a wood burner once the bioethanol fireplace has warmed up.

It takes around ten to twenty minutes for the yellow flames to appear — the flames look blue at first. The flames build in size over time, like a conventional fire, so expect smaller flames when you first light your biofire.

What happens if I spill some bioethanol fuel?

Always check there is no spilled fuel around or underneath the fuel box.  If you biofire has an additional outer section to hold any spills, always check this too.  Wipe up any spilt bioethanol fuel that's fallen outside the fuel box aperture before you light your bioethanol fire. Use a paper towel or a cloth to mop up the fuel.

You're much less likely to spill or dribble any biofuel with ImaginFires products because we supply our bioethanol in a handy squeezy bottle with a no-drip cap, and we build no-spill fuel boxes into all our bioethanol fireplaces.

  • Can I move my bioethanol fireplace?

Since many of our bioethanol fireplaces require absolutely no installation, these can easily move to different rooms or different locations. You can experiment as many times as you like. They are not fixed to one location!. Whichever room you decide to locate the bioethanol fire, please ensure that the room is well ventilated. This means not putting the biofire in an air sealed room, but in rooms that have some natural circulation.  Never move the biofuel fireplace whilst lit or with any biofuel inside the burner box. Always ensure that the unit has cooled completely before moving it. Allow at least 30 minutes for the stainless steel fuel box to cool.

  • How do I fix a bioethanol fireplace to a wall?

We’re happy to say that fixing an ImaginFires wall-mounted fireplace to the wall is very simple.

All our wall-mounted bioethanol fireplaces come with full hanging instructions and all the fittings and fixings you’ll need to fasten your beautiful fireplace to the wall securely.

Can I fix a wall-mounted fireplace to any wall?

The exact process you follow to attach your fireplace depends on the type of wall holding the fireplace in position.

For brick and plaster walls, all you need is a drill with a masonry drill bit. We supply the rawl plugs, brackets, and screws.

For other wall types, such as stud walls, ask for advice from your local DIY store or a reputable builder — you may need hollow wall anchor fixings to secure your bioethanol fireplace to the wall safely.

    What’s included with a wall-mounted fireplace?

We deliver all our bioethanol fireplaces with secure packaging to ensure your product remains safe during transit.

Simply unpack your fireplace, and it’s pretty much ready to go. Ensure you remove all packaging before you first light your fire.

We supply easy-to-follow instructions, including advice about the safe placement of your fireplace. We also provide everything you need (apart from a drill) to fix your wall-mounted fireplace to the wall.

Once you’ve drilled the holes and inserted the rawl plugs, you can hang the included bracket. Make sure it’s securely fastened to the wall before hanging the fireplace.

Do my walls become hot with a wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace?

Yes, your walls will likely get very warm above and around your bioethanol fireplace. Don’t allow children to touch the surrounding walls while your fireplace burns.

And remember, the walls will maintain heat for a while after snubbing out the flame.

Can I place wires behind my wall-mounted bioethanol fireplace?

Keep all wires from other appliances, such as TVs, away from the back of your bioethanol fireplace.

Wires behind the biofire could overheat and potentially damage your electrical equipment or cause a fire hazard.

How much space above the top of my biofire should I leave?

Some wall-mounted bioethanol fireplaces, such as our Alden range, are open at the top, which means that there’s no “roof” to enclose the fireplace. In this case, we recommend leaving an additional gap of at least 60cm around the top and sides of your biofire.

If your wall-mounted fireplace has a top (or roof), such as our Arlington or Marlow ranges, we recommend a gap of at least 30cm.

Can I attach my wall-mounted biofire underneath a TV?

It’s possible to install your biofire underneath a wall-mounted TV set, but we recommend leaving a gap of at least 30cm between the top of your fire and the bottom of the TV if your fireplace has a “roof”.

For open biofires without a roof, we recommend installing a fire- and heat-proof shelfbetween the fireplace and the TV.

  • How should I clean my bioethanol fireplace?

Maintaining the appearance of your bioethanol fireplace is simple and helps preserve its lifespan. Regular cleaning prevents soot buildup and ensures your fireplace remains an elegant feature in your home. Follow these steps to keep your biofire looking as good on the inside as it does on the outside:

    • Use mild cleaning agents: Start by applying a non-scratch scourer with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid for general surface cleaning.
    • Polish the stainless steel components: To maintain the bright finish of the stainless steel fuel box, use a stainless steel cleaner. Make sure to rub gently to avoid scratches.
    • Wipe down exterior surfaces: Use a soft, humid cloth to clean the outside panels, removing dust or fingerprints that may accumulate over time.

    Important Tips for Cleaning

    • Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area first to avoid potential damage.
    • Ensure the fuel box and all cleaned areas are completely dry before adding bioethanol fuel or lighting the fire.
    • Regular cleaning not only maintains the fireplace’s aesthetic appeal but also helps reduce the risk of spills and ensures safe operation.

For any further questions about maintaining your bioethanol fireplace, feel free to reach out to our team for expert advice.

  • Can I adjust the flame size of my biofire?

It’s super simple to adjust your ethanol flame size. In fact, this is one of the major advantages of bioethanol fireplaces over traditional wood burners - it’s possible to instantly control the size of your bioethanol flame.

How to adjust a fireplace flame

Simply slide the cover (using the tool provided, see below) of the stainless steel fuel box to limit the size of the aperture, opening or closing it as much as you require.

Leaving the fuel box completely open provides the largest, most dramatic bioethanol flames and the most significant heat output (around 3kWh - roughly the same as an electric fire on medium heat).

However, your bioethanol fuel lasts longer if you half-close the cover, smaller flame equals longer usage time.

Ethanol flames - how they work

Your bioethanol flame takes a few minutes to reach peak size and appearance. Once the burner has warmed up and the fireplace is burning fiercely, half closing the aperture reduces the flame size and the heat output.

Slide the cover of your no-spill stainless steel fuel box for instant control over the flame size and fuel efficiency.

You can also instantly snuff out your ethanol flame at the end of the night rather than letting it burn out like a traditional wood burner.

  • How often should i check the steel burner box?

Since the fuel is housed in the stainless steel burner box of the bioethanol fire, its very important that there are no cracks or leaks in this component.  Although most of our burner boxes are double lined for additional safety, we still recommend that from time to time you give a quick visual check to see if any cracks have appeared in any part of the burner box, especially if you have dropped or knocked it.  If you do notice any gaps or fractures, please contact us to arrange for a replacement at  support@imaginfires.co.uk , stating your order number and approximate date of purchase.

  • What is the discolouration on the underside of the roof of my fire, and how can I get rid of it?

Bioethanol fuel burns cleanly, so there shouldn't be any signs of discolouration anywhere on your biofire.

However, there are occasions where discolouration could occur:

    • Impure bioethanol fuel ImaginFires' own-brand bioethanol fuel is guaranteed pure and free of pollutants; other brands may include impurities, which could cause this temporary discolouration.
    • Household cleaning products — we recommend cleaning your biofire with a soft, dry duster. Avoid using household polishes or cleaning waxes, as these leave a surface film that could discolour when exposed to a flame.
    • Wrongly positioned accessories- Accessories such as ceramic logs and pebbles must never be positioned over the flames of a biofire. Position them around the fuel box opening, NOT OVER the opening.

How do I clean discolouration from the roof of my biofire?

Occasionally, you may notice some temporary discolouration on the paintwork of your bioethanol fireplace

Whenever this occurs, don't panic: it's a harmless residue. Clean it with a soft, non-abrasive sponge and a dash of washing-up liquid.

Alternatively, discolouration may occur from cleaning products used to clean the body of your biofire. In this case, we recommend using a clean, dry duster to clean your bioethanol fireplace — avoid using household polish or cleaning wax to clean your biofire.

Can biofire accessories cause discolouration on the body of the fireplace?

Accessories, such as ceramic logs and pebbles, are available for your biofire. But we only recommend using ImaginFires’ own-brand accessories because we have tested these extensively and as long as they are correctly positioned (around the fuel box opening, not over it) they won’t damage your bioethanol fireplace in any way.

Cheap biofire accessories may react with the flame and could cause discolouration to the body of the fire.

In this case, use hot water, a dash of washing-up liquid, and a soft cloth to remove the stain.

What cleaning products can I use to clean my biofire?

Your biofire requires minimal cleaning as bioethanol produces no soot, ash, or smoke. This means the glass should remain clean and clear, with no ash to empty.

However, your biofire is likely to get dusty, so we recommend either:

    • Wiping down with a duster . Avoid using household polishes and cleaning waxes.
    • Using the extension wand and crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner . Make sure the cleaner head is cushioned to avoid scratches on the surface of your biofire

Does a bioethanol fireplace need regular cleaning?

In general, biofires require very little maintenance. Bioethanol burns cleanly, meaning there's absolutely no waste or mess to clean up after using the fire.

However, the stainless steel fuel box may become tainted over time, losing its sparkle and sheen.

It's safe to use cream cleaners, such as Cif, to restore the look of your fuel box — just ensure you thoroughly wipe away the cleaning fluids before you relight your fire.

Leaving product on the fuel box could cause further discolouration.

I've spilt some bioethanol over the fuel box. What should I do?

Cleaning spilt bioethanol is simple — just wipe it up with a soft cloth or kitchen towel.

Ensure you've removed all the moisture from the spill, and carry on as usual.

    Easy!

  • Can i use the fireplace outdoors?

The simple answer is YES! Although the primary purpose of these biofires is not for outside use, they will still look great and can be used outside as long as you're aware of some key points.

    • The overall heat recieved from these will not be as high as when used indoors.
    • Please keep it covered with a waterproof cover when not in use and do not store outdoors all year round.
    • Before use, always check the fuel box is free from water or any other foreign bodies, and is dry.  Any foreign object inside the fuel box when it is lit is of course dangerous.
    • Ensure any flammable items are moved beyond reach of any flames, allowing for the risk of winds blowing the flame in an unexpceted direction.
  • Before you use the Biofire for first time!

Your ImaginFires bioethanol fireplace is pretty much ready to go straight out of the box. However, there are some things to consider before you light it for the first time.

We suggest carrying out the following checks to make sure all is safe.

Check your bioethanol fuel box for remnants of packaging

Your bioethanol fireplace doesn’t need a flue or a chimney. It’s perfectly safe to burn bioethanol fuel in the home because it combusts cleanly — you’ll find none of the smoke, ash, or mess you might associate with a log burner or open fire. Bioethanol produces heat, light, a little water vapour, and a little carbon dioxide rather than smoke or soot.

However, we recommend that you make sure the steel fuel box is clear of packing remnants before you light it for the first time. There may be tiny pieces of paper or plastic in the burning aperture or stuck around the fuel box; these will create unwanted fumes.

So, we recommend wiping the external body of the fuel box with a water-moistened cloth and vacuuming the aperture with a nozzle before you first light your bioethanol fireplace.

Fill your bioethanol fuel box to the MAX position

One of the great things about bioethanol fuel is that there’s very little waste. Unlike a traditional wood burner, you can immediately snuff out the flames when you no longer wish to heat your room. Simply close the fuel box slider, and hey presto, the flame goes out. And any unburnt fuel will remain in your fuel box until your next burn (although it may evaporate eventually).

Normally, you can add a small amount of fuel if you wish to light the flame for a short duration. However, we recommend filling the fuel box entirely for your first burn — using less may prevent proper ignition, and your flame may go out.

Never fill bioethanol fuel above the MAX mark

Never overfill your bioethanol fuel box — it could be dangerous. You should never see liquid fuel inside the burning mesh after you’ve filled the box.

NEVER fill past the MAX mark, or you could risk a house fire.

Wipe your fuel box before lighting

We recommend using a funnel when filling your bioethanol fireplace with fuel. We supply specially designed no-spill spouts with our premium own-brand low-odour ImagiFuel — nonetheless, if you squeeze the bottle too hard, it can spill over the body of the fuel box.

ALWAYS ensure that you wipe all spillages — however small. Remember, safety must always come first — if you’ve accidentally spilt bioethanol inside or outside the fuel box, don’t light it until you’ve cleaned up.

You can clean up bioethanol fuel with a cloth — just soak it up, then rinse your cloth. And you’re ready for a lovely, cosy, eco-friendly indoor flame!

  • How hot is an ethanol fireplace?

One of the most common questions we’re asked is “do bioethanol fires give off heat?” and “How hot is an ethanol fireplace?”

The use of bioethanol fuel is relatively new in the UK but has been used widely in Europe for decades. So, it’s natural that people in the UK ask about potential bioethanol disadvantages.

Our customers continually tell us how surprised they are by the level of heat their bioethanol fireplace produces - check out our on-site and Trustpilot reviews!). Indeed, a bioethanol fire is a real flame, so it naturally produces heat.

    Bioethanol disadvantages vs wood/coal burning

While bioethanol fireplaces won’t produce the same amount of heat as a traditional wood burner, this isn’t necessarily a disadvantage because many wood burners are too hot for the rooms in which they’re installed.

Bioethanol fireplaces give off roughly 3kWh of heat - approximately the same amount as an electric fire on medium/high. A bioethanol fireplace won't heat a freezing room but will bring the temperature up a good 2-3 degrees (ºC) - perfect for taking the chill out of the air.

  • What is the 'whoosh' when I light my biofire?

Sometimes when you light the biofire, you may experience a 'whoosh' of the biofuel. This can be caused by the temperature of the biofuel being different to the ambient temperature or the temperature of the fuel box. This is why we always recommend you use a long firefighter when lighting a biofire, always remove any excess/spilt fuel and light at arms length.

  • Can bioethanol fireplaces be used in a camper van?

Using a bioethanol fireplace in a camper van is not recommended due to safety concerns and potential risks. Here's why:

    Safety and Space Limitations

A bioethanol fireplace generates heat and flame, which can pose significant dangers when used in a confined space like a camper van. Consider the following points:

    • Heat and Instability: Bioethanol fireplaces can become very hot during operation, and within the limited space of a camper van, this heat can create an unstable environment.
    • Risk of Combustion: The open flame and the flammable nature of bioethanol fuel increase the risk of fire hazards in the small and enclosed space of a camper van.
    • Lack of Proper Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is essential for safe use of bioethanol fireplaces. Camper vans may not provide sufficient ventilation to dissipate combustion byproducts, such as carbon monoxide.

    Our Recommendation

At Imaginfires, we prioritise biofire safety and recommend against using our bioethanol fireplaces or any other similar products in a camper van.

While we acknowledge that some individuals may attempt DIY installations, it is important to consider the potential risks and adhere to proper safety guidelines.

For suitable heating options and guidance specific to camper vans, we recommend exploring alternatives designed for mobile environments, such as portable electric heaters or heating systems specifically designed for camper vans.

  • How do you properly maintain a bioethanol fuel box?

Proper maintenance of your bioethanol fuel box is crucial to ensure safe and efficient usage of your bioethanol fireplace. Since the fuel is housed in the stainless steel burner box of the bioethanol fire, it is very important that there are no cracks or leaks in this component. Although most of our burner boxes are double lined for additional safety, we still recommend that from time to time you give a quick visual check to see if any cracks have appeared in any part of the burner box, especially if you have dropped or knocked it.

Essential steps to bioethanol fuel box maintenance

    • Regular inspection: Before each use, carefully inspect the fuel box for any cracks, leaks, or damages. If you notice any issues, do not use the box, and seek a replacement.
    • Expiry date: Check the expiration date of the bioethanol fuel and avoid using it after the specified date. Expired fuel may not burn correctly and could lead to potential hazards.

Maintaining your bioethanol fuel box in accordance with these steps ensures both safety and the longevity of your bioethanol fireplace setup.

  • How do you put out a bio ethanol fire?

The stainless-steel fuel box has a shutter that can be closed to shut off the flame. Always use the supplied tools to do this. Never use your hands or any part of your body to do this as the fuel box will be very hot. Do not move the bio fire until the stainless-steel fuel box has cooled.

  • Should I order the large or small logs set?

There is no right or wrong answer. It's just a matter of personal preference. Some customers like the look of just a few logs in front of the flame, and so the small log set containing 3 logs is ideal. Others prefer the more 'full look' of the large set, which typically contains a mix of 9 logs/cones. A small number of customers prefer a more minimalist aesthetic of no accessories at all. Regardless of what set you choose, please just remember not to put them OVER the opening of the fuel box. Only locate them AROUND the opening.

  • What size are the ceramic logs?

We sell two versions of the ceramic log sets. The smaller sets contains 3 pieces of logs only. The larger set contains around 9 pieces of a mixture of pines and cones. Although the exact sizes vary, the approximate size of the logs are between 13cm and 17cm. You can use either the large or small sets for our biofires. It's just a matter of personal preference which set you prefer.

  • How do I use pebbles or logs in my bioethanol fireplace?

Bioethanol fireplaces produce a beautiful, real flame and introduce the cosiness of a real fireplace into your room (without the existential guilt of burning fossil fuels).

Many of our customers love the minimalist look of the dancing flame from the stainless steel fuel box, but others enjoy the more traditional look of ceramic pebbles or logs placed around the flame.

The ceramic pebbles and logs we sell are for decorative purposes only. You must use only recommended ceramic logs and stones — NEVER add anything else to your fireplace.

Can I use other fuels in my bioethanol fireplaces?

    No.

Never add paper, wood, charcoal, or coal inside your bioethanol fireplace. You need a chimney or flue to burn these items.

Our bioethanol fireplaces are not designed to burn fuel other than bioethanol.

Can I use ordinary pebbles or logs in my bioethanol fireplace?

We only recommend using the ceramic logs and pebbles we supply. This is because we’ve thoroughly tested our products and know they’re safe to use.

Never add paper, wood, charcoal, or coal inside your bioethanol fireplace. You need a chimney or flue to burn these items.

You may find ceramic logs or pebbles online, but we can’t vouch for their safety. We haven’t been able to assess their impact on combustion quality, so we can’t say whether other products are safe to use with our biofires.

Only use recommended pebbles and logs in your bioethanol fireplace.

Where do I place my ceramic pebbles and logs in my bioethanol fireplace?

Never cover the opening of the fuel box with ANYTHING, including ceramic pebbles and logs. These should be placed AROUND the opening to ensure that they allow your bioethanol fuel to burn correctly and safely.

We recommend removing all ceramic pebbles and logs before refilling the fuel tank — that way, you’ll avoid accidentally spraying bioethanol over your ornamental logs and stones. They’ll be hot if you have been using your fire, so let them cool down before you move them.

If you spill any fuel as your refill, wipe it down thoroughly before lighting. And don’t allow ceramic accessories to touch the glass panels of your bioethanol fireplace.

  • Do you have showrooms?

We currently trade exclusively through our online shop — we don't have a physical showroom at this time. This helps us maintain competitive prices, allowing us to focus on delivering exceptional, affordable products for most budgets, from as low as £179.99.

However, we do supply a number of retailers and distributors.

How can I see a biofire in action?

We might not have a showroom, but we have a range of instructional videos demonstrating how to use a bioethanol fireplace and what a biofire looks like in action

The flames are initially small with a blue tinge. However, they grow larger and more yellow after the fire has warmed up (around twenty minutes).

What's the difference between a biofire and a wood-burning flame?

There's a lot of confusion about the effectiveness of bioethanol fireplaces. However, you'll find that your biofire heats your room to a comfortable, cosy temperature.

The differences between a biofire and a wood-burning fire are many.  Traditional woodburners tend to involve significant investment to both purchase the wodburner, install it and then maintain it. You’ll find many examples on the internet of this adding to £1500 or more.

Bifoires just require the biofire itself and the biofuel.  Many biofires are less than £500 and need no installation and certainly no on-going maintenance costs.  Woodburners emit a very nice and very intense heat and are often intended to replace an existing boiler or other heating source.

Biofires are NOT intended to replace your current system. They are simply to add to your existing heating system. Typically, customers enjoy the simplicity of using a biofire to get a real natural flame that is for occasional enjoyment.  You’ll probably find you can turn your central heating down, but you’ll still want to keep it!

Can I trust ImaginFires without seeing the fireplace in action first?

We understand that many people are cautious about buying products from online retailers. And we think you're right to be careful.

However, we're very proud of our Trustpilot rating, where our valued customers have shared their customer experiences. We're currently rated "Excellent" on Trustpilot and work very hard to maintain our excellent customer relationships.
