General Use FAQs
- Where can I use my bioethanol fireplace?
For our wall mounted bio fires, just like any fire, you need sufficient wall space with no flammable materials such as soft fabrics, curtains etc within at least a metre. The free standing bio fires can be used indoors and outdoors but please be mindful that any strong winds will blow the flame in random directions. Also bear in mind that the bio fire is a real flame, so it needs to be positioned in a place where it will not be knocked over. Knocking the bioethanol fire over is extremely dangerous since it is a real flame. Always ensure that the free standing fires are placed on a smooth, even, flat surface. NEVER move the biofuel fireplace whilst lit or with any biofuel inside the fuel box. Always ensure that the unit has cooled completely before moving it. Always ensure that any room you choose to use the bio fire in is well ventilated.
- What should I do if there any biofuel spillages?
You should always ensure the bioethanol fire and surrounding area are free of any spillages and the area is completely dry. Ensure that you only pour biofuel into the correct parrt of the steel fuel box. Take care also not to spill biofuel down any side gaps of the fuel box . If this happens, then this fuel may also light and flames could come from the side gaps of the fuel box. Just use some kitchen towel or similar to clear away any spillages.
- How should I clean my imagin bioethanol fireplace?
We suggest that you test any cleaning liquids on a part of the fire that is least visible. However, just some ordinary hot water and washing up liquid with a non-scratch scourer will suffice for the majority of cleaning needs. For the stainless steel fuel box, you can also use most stainless steel cleaners. It takes just a few minutes to get the fuelbox looking almost as bright as the day you 1st bought it. Make sure the cleaned fuel box is completely dry before use.
- What is a ventless fireplace?
A ventless biofuel fireplace is simply a fireplace that does not require a chimney, flue or any other venting duct. If you have a biofuel fireplace and some biofuel, then you have all you need to create a beautiful looking fire. Since no flue or chimney is needed, its much easier and cheaper to install than a more traditional gas or wood fireplace.

- How does a bioethanol fire work?
Bio ethanol fireplaces (also known as biofires) don't require chimneys or flues as the fuel burns without producing smoke or soot. The bioethanol fuel is poured into our double lined stainless steel fuel box (any spillages must be wiped away before lighting) and lit with a firelighter. The flame height can be adjusted by opening or closing the fuel box slightly. Once finished simply slide the shutter over the opening in the fuel box to extinguish the flame. It's that easy !
- What advantages do Imaginfires products have over other manufacturers?
Most of our products are carefully designed by us, and are exclusive to imaginfires. Our bioethanol fuel boxes are manufactured from a very high grade stainless steel and double lined for additional safety and longevity. The closing mechanism on the fuel box is of a thickness and quality that most other fuel boxes simply do not have. They also have a high grade ceramic fibre lining which helps extend burn time and creates a consistent flame. Many other fuel boxes use a low grade ceramic which quickly wears out and is extremely difficult to replace.
- Can i add scent or fragrance oils to the fireplace?
We only recommend using bioethanol fuel with at least 95% alcohol content with no additives. Adding fragrance oils would have an effect on the combustion of the fire which could lead to unclean combustion.
Why not try our new scented fuel options : COFFEE or DEEP FOREST
- Are bio ethanol fireplaces suitable for Timber frame houses?
Our bioethanol fires are designed to be positioned in a ‘standard’ domestic dwelling, so if you have a timber frame home, we suggest you take additional precautions to ensure there is no fire hazard. This includes if you are fitting a wall mounted fireplace, the wall should be able to easily take the weight of the fireplace, and it should be lined with fire-retardant paint or lining. Please also pay particular attention to ensure there are is no risk the fireplace is left unattended, or can be knocked over. It should always be positioned where there is no risk of draughts blowing the flame into flammable materials.
- Can i put a shelf above the fireplace?
As there is no smoke given off by our bioethanol fires, you don’t need to worry about smoke damage above the fireplace. Nevertheless, we recommend that you only place a Shelf above a bio ethanol fireplace that has a closed top, such as our extremely popular wall mounted MARLOW. There should be a minimum of 18 inches between the top of the fire and the underside of the shelf. We do advise however that all flammable materials are kept at least 1m from the flames.
- What is the best way to close off an existing chimney?
There are many ways to close off an existing chimney, this is dependent on type, size, materials etc. Your best option would be to speak to a local builder or diy store for help in choosing your particular solution.
- Why has the glass shattered on my fireplace?
Our glass is tested to withstand temperatures far higher than the output of our Bio Fires so shattering can only occur if the glass has taken an impact (sometimes not noticeable to the eye) therefore testing its resistance. This can also happen many days, weeks or months after the impact has taken place. Please contact us for a replacement.
- Can i use the fireplace outdoors?
The simple answer is YES! If you intend to use our fireplaces outdoors, please keep it covered with a waterproof cover when not in use and do not store outdoors all year round. When uncovering the fireplace, ensure that there is no water in the fuel box or in the fireplace before use water can collect internally and damage the fire.
- Can I move my bioethanol fireplace?
Since many of our bioethanol fireplaces require absolutely no installation, these can easily move to different rooms or different locations. You can experiment as many times as you like. They are not fixed to one location!. Whichever room you decide to locate the bioethanol fire, please ensure that the room is well ventilated. This means not putting the biofire in an air sealed room, but in rooms that have some natural circulation. Never move the biofuel fireplace whilst lit or with any biofuel inside the burner box. Always ensure that the unit has cooled completely before moving it. Allow at least 30 minutes for the stainless steel fuel box to cool.
- Can I put my TV above a bioethanol fireplace?
As there is no smoke given off by our bioethanol fires, you don't need to worry about smoke damage to your TV. Nevertheless, we recommend that you only place a TV above a bio ethanol fireplace that has a closed top, such as our extremely popular wall mounted MARLOW
Ideally you can leave 18 inches between the top of the fire and the bottom of the TV.
- Can I adjust the flame size of my biofire?
Very easily ! To reduce the flame size on our bio ethanol fireplaces, you can just slide the cover of the stainless steel fuel box over the opening as much as you require.
- How often should i check the steel burner box?
Since the fuel is housed in the stainless steel burner box of the bioethanol fire, its very important that there are no cracks or leaks in this component. Although most of our burner boxes are double lined for additional safety, we still recommend that from time to time you give a quick visual check to see if any cracks have appeared in any part of the burner box, especially if you have dropped or knocked it. If you do notice any gaps or fractures, please contact us to arrange for a replacement at [email protected] , stating your order number and approximate date of purchase.
